Portals on Moving Surfaces
Considering we're probably going to see the Portal 2 SDK soon, I am wondering if the usage of portals on moving surfaces will now be allowed?
I ask this simply because, spoilers ahead,
In the original Portal, the ability to put portals on moving surfaces was prohibited through hard coding. The possibilities of allowing moving portals would indeed be an interesting concept for many SDK portal mapmakers. So, let's start a discussion of ideas and perhaps maybe someone can shed some light on the subject. |

I noticed that too when destroying the neurotoxin, it says that it's impossible to shoot portals on moving objects yet you were able to do that. . .

The reason you can't put portals on moving surfaces is because they're not made of portal-able material. If you make something that moves and is also made of a portal-able material, you'll be fine.

There are plenty of portal-able surfaces that you can't place portals on in both the original game and Portal 2 simply because the surfaces are moving. Once they've stopped, it's all fine. |

I also noticed this during the part where Wheatley tries to kill you by moving a chamber in the way to block your path. You have to shoot a portal on the lower girder and then into the next room to get past.
Problem is, you can't put a portal on the girder while it's moving in to crush the catwalk you're on; only when it's stopped. So yeah, what's the deal Valve? |

Yeah, that part actually took me a couple of minutes because I figured that I couldn't put the portal on a moving surface lol.
I think the SDK will accommodate moving surface portals now. |

This obviously means the engine is capable of this stuff. Now we need a modder to fully implant these, and then smash a cube between two portals, on Gabe Newell's computer.

I can't remember any portal-able moving surface in Portal 1. Can you give me an example? I honestly don't remember.

Possible hardcoding to get around hardcoding?

Well, I can only hope they can be placed on movable surfaces.
Maybe we'll see a challenge sometime soon. |
