To you, what would a 100-90 metascored game contain?

Please answer with some detail, and not just simply naming games. Is it the story? The characters? The graphics? What is it?

Story, characters graphics the whole 9 yards. Being a mature game helps to imo as those are the game i like to play. Blood, swearing, violence and half naked women. yea.

Frankly, something other then todays cutting edge graphics. I cringe when people list STALKER or Mass Effect 2 in their top ten list of all time favorite games.

If someone walked up to you and said, "I'm gonna give you this paper with a list of games. All you have to do is give your personal metascore for each of them. Do that, and I'll give you $30."

The games listed said paper:
  • Fallout 3
  • BioShock
  • BioShock 2
  • Penumbra: Overture
  • Penumbra: Black Plaque
  • Portal
  • Portal 2
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
  • F.E.A.R.
  • F.E.A.R. 2
  • The Path
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Grand Theft Auto IV
What would be your scores for (all of) them?

The games listed said paper:
  • Fallout 3 - 70
  • BioShock - I haven't finished yet, but a solid 78
  • BioShock 2 - N/A
  • Penumbra: Overture - Too long since I've played this
  • Penumbra: Black Plaque - N/A
  • Portal - 80
  • Portal 2 - N/A
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - N/A
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - N/A
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops - N/A
  • The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - 75
  • F.E.A.R. - Too long since I've played this
  • F.E.A.R. 2 - N/A
  • The Path - N/A
  • Team Fortress 2 - 70
  • Grand Theft Auto IV - 75

No 30 dollars for me

Anyway, for me a 90+ game should be close to perfection.
Fun to play from start to finish, interesting story, "non-horrible" graphics (ie: they don't have to look splendid or super modern, but they must look good), brilliant soundtrack, decent longevity (compared to the price, 10 hours for a full-priced game is *NOT* a decent longevity).
And a lot of other factors which just differ from game to game and are impossible to list.

Keep in mind that Metacritic scores are extremely botched, because they use a conversion system that just doesn't work: many of the "professional" critics they take their scores from use a 5 points rating. You cannot tell me that 4/5 = 80/100 and 5/5 = 100/100. Mathematically, yes, they do, of course. But not in that context. That's why many titles end up having absurdly high scores.

prefer if games are rated separately for SP/MP (story,game-play...) and combined rating for common stuff between SP/MP (graphics,audio...).

let the gamer see what he/she wants out of the game and average out a rating combo accordingly.

like
Single player: 78
Multi player: 91
Technical: 84

Battlefield 2 for example, the last thing I would care about is the included single player. would give it a 90+ even if single player is just rated 50.

Other games like indie games I would probably look at either high SP focused or MP focused and wouldn't mind low technical.

-No bugs or few minor bugs only, major bugs is a no-no
-Engaging storyline and characters
-At least 10 hours of gameplay

Done.

Also I'd expect a 90+ game to have decent graphics, replayability and a good plot with likable characters (with a single player that's not done within 4 - 5 hours). The game would also have to be shipped without any major bugs.
