There are nearly 300 90+ games on Metacritic.
I know some of this is down to personal preference but I honestly don't think there are 300 games that deserve this score.
On average, user scores are a bit lower and more accurate. Just have to ignore the useless polarized opinions.

My favourite 3 games I would score 95% for the overall experience they give. With the 5% buffer in the hope things can improve.

humorous, lovable characters
a plot line thats funny, like questioning reality and alluding to the fact you are in the game
perfect graphics
enemies that are fun to kill, and alies to play with
non repetitive, yet very, very long (and complete and launch)
i need friends to play on it
decent pricing

If Alan Wake was a little less repetitive during combat then you would have your answer. Great story, great characters, great environments, and great game length. The advertisements weren't as bad as people make it sound either.

Great gameplay. The rest only needs to be decent. I can put up with a lot, but if the gameplay is bad, I won't like it, no matter how shiny it looks.

Well, taking into account today's general metascore climate, I'd say most big-budget titles with a strong marketing department.

well to me, if it's a valve game, it automatically gets an 89.If it goes above that then it surely is something deserving.
