Is there any chance that the replayer will be refitted to accept media players *other* than Quicktime?

We chose Quicktime in order to support both PC's and Mac users equally, and to store the replay movies in a file format that would be playable by the largest number of people and video player programs out there, as well as being compatible with YouTube, etc.

For PC users who don't want to go through Apple's install process, please note that Quicktime Alternative works for TF replays, and can be configured to install only the codecs needed to play and create Quicktime movie files.

That said, we are looking into providing support for additional video containers and video codecs in the future. Obviously I can't promise anything concrete, but I think our track record of ongoing support for TF speaks for itself.

Remember, we just released the Replay feature *one day* ago.

We're going to watch closely and listen to you for problems to fix and ideas for future development.

Did you try rebooting like it tells you to?

Quicktime uses x264. You don't need to install iTunes with it. Using something like VLC that is changed and updated frequently could end up breaking, plus versions can be inconsistent across platforms.
You really need something better to complain about.

Don't quote me unless you know what your talking about, I am not talking about h.264, x264 is a whole different encoder that is not stupid, unlike quicktime.

You could've used x264 (you can get a commercial license for the encoder, would still need a patent license from MPEGLA if Valve doesn't already have one) with MP4 and/or Matroska for a container.

Of course, using QuickTime was probably cheaper

If you're using QuickTime to transcode, wouldn't an open-source (and compact) alternative like ffmpeg be superior?

Cheaper yes, but then they would have been able to build it into tf2 itself and have no dependencies. It would probably also render faster, unless there is some other bottleneck.

And now that I think of it, this is the second time valve has had a good idea, and come up short in some dumb way, steam photos, lack of png, and now this, unless I'm missing an important element.

This is PC we are talking about.
Surely there are tons of free media players better than Quicktime.

For instance you can check out MV2Player. It doesn't eat system resources
like Quicktime does and it doesn't try to spy on me and accsess the internet
without asking me.
