8gb ram vs 16gb

Anyone gone from 8gb to 16gb ram? Would you see a improvment in gaming by doing so?

Ive gone from 2gb to 4gb in my last pc and saw a big improvment. I have 8gb in my new rig and was thing about going to 16.

4GB is usually enough for any game. 16GB would be a waste for gaming.

I can't imagine why you would see any improvement in gaming. Most games don't use more that about 2GB of RAM.

The only improvement there would be if you were doing a huge amount of video editing or similar tasks.

might get a bandwidth boost from 2-4GB, also you have to bear in mind the game will be using about 2GB and then there's background programs and OS to consider.

OP if you're video editing or rendering regularly you might see an improvement, but 8GB is plenty for even that.

4GB is more than enough for gaming. But I would recommend 8GB because it's more future-safe.
I have 16 GB, but that is because I do video and image editing

im a gammer and people say that 4gigs is enough.

i disagree. a few times while playing cod i have see my sytem hit 4.2 gig ram usage.

i have 8gigs of ram.

even while using google earth i have seen my system hit 75% usage.

i think 8 gigs is the spot you want to be at for gamming.

16 for editing.

imo.

His statement still stands, Very few games ever use more than 2GB. Many get quite close to that number so if you have a mere 2GB total You are probably already using 1.5GB when you start MW2 causing it to unload stuff from memory to make room for it.

Upgrading to 4GB means that you would not have to unload anything as there would be enough room for MW2.

The reason for that would be because when you had 2GB all of it wasn't available to the game, your hardware and OS make use of your RAM so you probably had somewhere around 1.5GB free.

There's only so many resources a game can utilize, having more on hand wont make a bit of difference if it's not being used. Now if your getting the 8GB for a bit of future proofing, then go ahead, but if your just getting it to try to improve gaming performance, your wasting your money.

Others have hit on my point. The point is that your OS and other apps need RAM too. If you only had 2GB before, some of that RAM was already needed by the OS. Upgrading from 2 to 4GB would have helped that. Now you have 8 GB. There is only so much RAM that is needed and you should really check how much RAM is being used before you just willy nilly purchase more.
