programmable mouse/keyboard get you banned?

I've never played multi-player online against anyone on Steam. I stumbled across this forum. I'm reading you can lose all your games if you make 'any' modifications intensional/unintensional. This is a real turn off. If over time I invest and have a collection of $2,000.00 in Steam Games and then program my 6 button mouse to auto-fire in a game that does not have auto-fire, or use the gaming keyboard and start up and *.mp3 file to listen to music in-game I'll be banned for cheating and lose access to all $2,000.00 of all games I ever owned?

What if someone else logs into my computer, goes to play Age of Mythology and in the server goes to a user-created game called RP and they start a totally modded game. He's shutdown, and I lose everything, no discussion, no dialog, no help, no hope of ever getting them back?

A little paranoid, but I think many other people have this perception of Steam in that they 'must' avoid steam multiplayer at all costs. y/n?

Does someone sell SteamInsurance?

Nope, Re-read the sticky thread.

Using official features of your mouse&keyboard won't get you banned, including macros. VAC never banned someone for using a intended and official feature of some HID.

Also if you get "banned" you can still load your games and play the single player features and even connec to servers that aren't VAC controlled. It's PURELY access to the VAC servers that you would be denied access to.

Let me make it easy to understand:
- no hardware piece that you plugin to your computer will get you banned.
- no script for any Valve games will get you banned
- no skins, GUI, sound modifications in any Valve games will get you banned
- any .exe or .dll addon file MIGHT get you banned
- any modification to COD:MW2 MIGHT get you banned

As long as you don't install CHEATS, you are pretty much fine.

Sounds good. Reading the forums, I'm still a little timid though.

Could there ever be a pre-game scan? "click here to see if you game was mod'ed or hacked (so you don't get banned), and you'll be given the option to repair your game before you play?"

You could check the game cache, which might not do much and that won't stop anything that's running or addons.

Servers can't install ban-able content, and the chances of a virus that alters your VAC content is very small. The only real way to get banned is to purposely download and install cheats. If you've got somebody on your computer you don't trust not to hack, there's your problem.

Also, don't trust the "I was banned wrongly" threads, most of them are hackers who got caught and want a (not going to happen) 2nd chance.

Fixed it for you.

No, there will never be anything like that.

It would be easy for cheat developers to produce undetected cheats like this. For this exact reasons VAC bans are delayed.

But as long as you do not cheat, you will not get banned. (Unless you are playing Call of Duty )
