Any modern Day versions of Railroad Tycoon?

Hai Guyz,

I have been an avid fan of the RR series since playing the first game on Mac in 1991. I have spent the most time with Railroads. Despite having a decent machine, I find this game addictive, yet boring. Is there any other similar series that might quench my thirst for playing with trains?

Hello Sinophile,

I too have loved railroad games since the original Railroad Tycoon. There are some decent games in the 'Giant' series from publisher Jowood. Traffic Giant, Industry Giant and Transport Giant however only Industry Giant runs on Vista/7. A recent game called Cities in Motion is ok too. I have gone back to the open version of Transport Tycoon Deluxe called OpenTTD. Runs perfectly on 7 and with ongoing community development is still the perfect trains game. With its age and current high speed computers you can built railroads with literally thousands of trains. You can download it for the Mac or any OS at openttd.org.

Cheers.

Well, there is the new user created Trainmaster. An updated version of RRT3, and a bit more difficult.
You can read about it at this link.

ok, im late, but if people enjoy building a complicated rail netwrok, i recommend open transport tycoon deluxe. It has big maps, high train limits and most importantly a LOT of different signals to allow you to make really complicated stations, intersections, loading bays etc.

While I applaud your effort, 1995 isn't quite what I would consider a modern game.

Open TTD is based of TTD (obviously) released in 1995. Open TTD itself has been developed since 1999.

I know there are new releases periodically but they dont often add new features.

I kind of wanted to revive this thread in case anyone haven't chipped in. I'm guessing there there just isn't any modern day Railroad Tycoon out there. I'm looking for some new games as well. I've played through RR2 and 3, Sid Meiers Trains or what it's called, so I'm kind looking for something new. I have Cities in Motion, and really like it. But I couldn't play more then about half an hour before the game crashing, never got it to work. Ben pondering if I should try it out again. Anyways, no new game sout there I take it ? I'm not looking for simulators like Railworks 3. Thanks in advance.

The last from the serie i've heard about was "Sid Meier's Railroads!" released in 2006. There's also "Cities in Motion", which is kind of a modern day Transport Tycoon. You might also want to check the "Train Simulator" franchise. They release one each year.

well honestly, if you want to build train tracks all over the map with the possibility to build vastly complex station entrances and intersections, open transport tycoon is simply the best.

Buildings stations where 20-30 trains arrive on 5 different tracks and then building the railway and signals in a way that those trains pick the best station entrance, without stopping and without making other trains stop, its glorious
