Multiplayer servers still up?

I just bought the game and I'm trying to register my account. Everytime I try it loads for a while and then says I can't connect to the multiplayer servers. Did they take the servers down due to inactivity or is it really a connection issue?

The weirdest thing to me, is that Steam doesn't even list the game as single-player, but as multi-player only. Can this actually be used single-player?
