Unplayable on Windows 7 x64

I installed this on XP 32-bit previously and had no problems at all.

Since then I've updated to Win7 x64.

When I run the game the game does this:
[ 5 seconds of single frame ][ 2 seconds of black ][ 5 seconds of next frame ][ 2 seconds of black ] ... repeat forever

Running the game in native resolution triggers this immediately
dropping down to 1280x800 only triggers it once I click new zoo and select a starting animal.

Anyone else experienced this?
Any work arounds?
