Opinions on The Bard's Tale?

I never played the original games but this one sounds funny and fun. What do you think of it?

I think I might put it on my wishlist and wait on a sale.

I played it when it first came out. I found it humerous and delightful. The action wasn't too bad. I'm not sure it aged well if you keep up with current video games.

Talking

It's one of my favorites. I spent 2 solid days of my weekend (off from work) trying to get the old 6-disc version from 2005 working correctly on my new system, because I hadn't played it in about 3 years or more. I missed this game so much. Only got to play through twice before my old system died and I had to build a new one.

Two days of ripping files off the discs, compiling them into one directory, tweaking stuff, only to have the game run great -- except NO dialog whatsoever. All spoken lines were missing. Spent two days looking for a fix, came up empty.

Saw "The Bard's Tale" available here on Steam for $10 and debated about 10 minutes over it, and I finally went ahead and bought it. For the price of going out to a movie, I can (hopefully) get waaay more enjoyment out of this game that I liked so much.

Downloaded through Steam, and it ran perfectly first try, with no tweaking whatsoever. I can only hope it stays this way, because the dialog is the bread-and-butter of this game. With only subtitles, this game is just a mediocre point-and-click adventure of better-than-average quality, but with the dialog available: It's priceless. I forgot how great this game was, and I'm glad Steam had it. GoG didn't have it, I should've known Steam wouldn't let me down.

If you're on the fence about getting it, and you like adventure games with a sense of humor (Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, The Monkey Island series, Discworld, etc {yes, I still have all of these running on my current system}) then this game is way funnier than those ever thought of being. Think if Mel Brooks made Neverwinter Nights...this game is funny, irreverent, and just a blast to play. The game can get a little repetitious with the endless Diablo-style fighting, but the dialog more than makes up for it.

The demo's still available. I downloaded it when I was trying to get the speech files working (thought I might get a clue from its setup), but I went and bought the thing on Steam. Couldn't stand the wait, and the aggravation, anymore.

I just love the "snarky" responses. Although, picking them exclusively locks out some options for gameplay/quests/rewards, I think.

I like to think I do.

I have a feeling I'll enjoy this one when I get around to it. For now I'm holding out for a sale since I've got too much stuff to play as it is. If it doesn't get cheaper by this holiday season I'll probably buy it then anyway and have some laughs over the holidays! I'm a long time RPG fan so I expect I'd enjoy the jokes.

As an 'experience' it's amusing. As a game it is pretty terrible.

Yeah, having read some reviews I had a feeling this might be the case but I think the amusement will probably make it worthwhile for me.

I played the PS2 version way back when it came out, and it was one of my favorite games. Still worth a buy even today, due to it's uniquity, humor, and sense of style.

You're a little late with that comment so why bother now? I'm not worried in any case and the majority view is positive and so are the reviews I've seen. Sorry you didn't like it though.
