How to upload any image into Steam's screenshot library

Download, install and add VLC Media Player to your Steam's Non-Steam game library.

Run VLC Media Player from Steam's launcher.

Select open file and set the file category to "any file" to make any image files visible. VLC is limited to the video resolutions your PC can handle so a picture that's too big won't open for you. If you open an image with a different proportion to your screen, black bars will come out on the screenshot to fill in the extra space. If your screen is 1600 x 900, it would be best to edit your image to fit these dimensions.

Select the image you want to use. The image will flash once in your screen and then turn to black. This is normal since VLC sees it as one frame of a video. You need to press play again and pause immediately afterwards to freeze the screen.

Run VLC in full screen mode by double-clicking the screen itself. This is when the movie takes up your entire monitor and the user interface is hidden. Steam Overlay and Steam Screenshots only work in this mode.

Press the Steam designated hotkey to take a screenshot. Do not upload any objectionable image that will result in your account being blocked or banned.

Sample images below:

DOTA 2
Sasha Grey

Note: Also works for uploading movie screen caps and webcam screen shots.

If images on your screenshot cloud could get your account banned/blocked, then Source engine players are going to have to not ever use the screenshot manager to take images that might have a questionable tag sprayed in the background.

I'm not saying it will happen. I'm saying that any Steam profile can be reported for making a violation. If someone finds something in your public screenshot library that offends them, Steam has the right to take appropriate actions. It's in their discretion of course.

I personally would not want to see if I'll get into trouble uploading pornography or shock media to Steam. People are going to figure this out anyways. And in case things might go out of hand, I decided to put in a disclaimer of sorts with my instructions.

They show up as under the game "VLC Media Player" though, e.g. http://steamcommunity.com/id/badcat/...=shortcut_1082

Try http://steamcommunity.com/id/netshro...215?tab=public or http://steamcommunity.com/id/netshro...209?tab=public :P

(I think they fixed the last one)

I actually named the shortcut VLC Media Player when I imported it as a Non-Steam game. That means I could have named it something else instead like Half-Life 2: Episode 3.

Sure, but it's still obvious it's a non-Steam shortcut.

But I wasn't interested in making it look like a Steam game. I just want to upload images on Steam using a free to download software.

I'm sure the other method is cool and all with people so surprised World of Goo got random screenshots. I'm fine with just this though.
