Dear Newbie - please read before playing
Dear Newbies,
WELCOME! You just got one of the best games with a terrific community. If you follow some simple guidelines you will find a ton of people who will help you have the best time. All ages and ability play so I will post the basic issues I have seen with new players. You may already do some of these things, but it will be helpful to read: LINKS TO THE GUIDES are at the bottom of the post. But the rules below will help in ways you can't imagine, so please read both in depth: - start at the beginning. Don't start as a level 0 and go right to HOE. Level 0 to level 1 should be Beginner Level. Now you know the game basics. Level 1 to Level 3 should be on Normal. MUCH HARDER than beginner, so now you have more experience. Level 2 - level 4 go to Hard, which is MUCH harder than Normal. You absolutely must be a level 5 or 6 to play Suicidal or Hell on Earth or you will be kicked because you can not play those levels yet. - read. Read your class description. Understand what weapons are best for your class and what your limitations are. Don't select level 1 Firebug then buy a Scar, Firebug buys a flamethrower and a Mac 10, Sharp Shooter buys a lever action rifle and a hand cannon, etc. These things are spelled out for you. You not only waste money and hurt the team, but you make the game less fun for yourself and by not picking the right weapon you stop your own progress in a class. You will NEVER be a level six Firebug if you don't use the MAc 10 and/or flamethower. You will NEVER be a level 6 Medic if you don't heal people. - don't waste money. Money is not easy to come by. If you get 1000 dosh don't buy the biggest weapon you can, no ammo, and no armor, then die 5 sec into a round with your self heal gun out. We just threw away money we could have used for ourselves , we have to kill your share of the Zeds, and we will hear you calling for more money the next round. BUY ARMOR BEFORE BIGGER WEAPONS!! Always buy your armor first, you need it. Save up for bigger weapons. The Lever Action Rifle, Bulpup, and Shotgun are great weapons you will use even when you become expert. DO NOT BUY DUAL PISTOLS!!! Don't expect to get thousands of dollars, at most you will probably get is 200 - 1000. Say thank you - be polite. Don't scream or demand money. Don't flame me and keep telling me your new if I give you some helpful tips. Believe me, I know from both your rank and how you play, and I am trying to help. Don't grab every weapon I drop as a back up. Don't spam messages just because you want to hear all the insults that the game can generate. Don't hit the "no" button everytime anybody asks a question. In general, be polite. - do not post before searching the forums. Guaranteed your question has been asked and answered 1000 times. Search, then search again, then again. Its there if you do the right search. If you find you made a duplicate post of a question already asked, delete your post so it doesn't clog up the forums. - if you have a major technical issue post a ticket on the trip wire forums. Experts will help you and you will get an answer. http://forums.tripwireinteractive.co...splay.php?f=58 You can also use this thread to get fixes to most common problems: If you have a technical issue or error - don't steal money or weapons. If I am giving money to a player don't run between us to grab it all. Ask nicely, we will share what we can. It's not an entitlement to get money. If I drop a weapon as a backup don't just take it. If I drop weapons for other people don't run over and grab them. If I die and drop an expensive weapon please ask me if I would like it back when I respawn. Its a coop game and your cooperation makes it more fun for both of us - stand still. Stand so we can heal you. Also, stop charging forward when you are half health with us healing you so that you can't regenerate and then we are stuck surrounded and down on health. Stand out of the way of the Demo man and the Sharp Shooter, they need clear shot to use the Xbow, LAW, M99 scopes. Its not always possible or even practical to stay out of the way, but at least try. - return the favor. If I heal you why won't you heal me back? First healing others works better than self heal, healing others goes toward increasing you medic rank, healing others earns you money. It's nice to return a favor. Same for giving money and weapons. Co-op, remember the that, co-op, short for cooperation. - cover other team mates. Our job is not to soley protect you whill getting eaten alive. CO-OP is the name of the game. Protect each other. - be nice at the trader. Move all the way in so you don't block the door. Spread out so people can get in and out. Buy armor and basic weapons and ammo first. A cross bow won't help you if you die from lack of armor. Stand still if you want money, ask politely. HURRY!!! You need to get in and out so try to be polite and fast. - ask. Ask if you don't know, Ask nicely. Understand that you are not the first newbie to ask so at time people might be less friendly than they should, but by asking and being polite you will find the help you need. Most people in Killing Floor are glad to help. - prepare. do your homework on the forums forums, read the beginner player guide. If you start the game and jump into Suicidal as a level zero you not only have zero chance of surviving, but you also HURT THE TEAM. When you get booted its not people being mean, its people telling you that you won't have any fun, you will die instantly, and you will ruin the game for others. Quote:

Good post OP!
I'll also add that this thread is important if you want the team to survive, again by bigguns: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=1810736 I've seen a lot of new players today and everyone so far has to shoot the big guy ![]() I will also add if you find players griefing you (welding the doors so you can't get out) don't bother unwelding it, just throw a grenade or two at the door and it will be gone. I've seen this a couple of times and nothing irritates me more than players who think it's fun to weld every door they go through so the new player is left struggling with which key is the weld tool and they panic and usually die soon after. |

Shouldn't this be stickied.
While the guide it self is clear and informative I've seen quite a few players (Likely thanks to big advertising campaigns) who will completely disregard anyone but themselves. For example happen to die with a AA12 drawn out that thing is as good as gone going to be sold off for 3200$+. And who ever stole it isn't going to be dumb enough to draw it out. I've also found (Lately) that there is no point in asking for money you won't get a dime even on the patriarch round, your welcome to try of course just most people are pretty damn cheap apparently. |

I need another thread. Dear experienced players, stop creating new threads complaining about newbies and direct people here or post ideas here so that there is a thread where they can get help and become good players.

All very good tips. The only thing I would disagree with is about starting with beginner mode. I think if someone is experienced with FPSes in general, starting with normal is fine. It doesn't take that long to level up to perk 2 and then they don't have to deal with the difficulty jump from beginner to normal. I think beginner is only for people who are totally new to the FPS genre.

You could start with normal, but getting used to the weapons and how the Zeds act by playing 3 or 4 games on beginner would not hurt. I stand by the recommendation but don't disagree that you jump to normal.

I've advanced to normal, and occasionally hard (on the larger servers), mainly because I want monsters to have enough health to level my perks.
One annoying thing to me, is the lighting in the game. For winning it is practical to turn brightness up. For fun and the point of the game, it is practical to have it at a realistic level. |

Also if someone deleted my post at your request, don't think newbies will read your holly thread then become some LightSoldiers without discovering bad things they can do to annoy other players or just for fun. Theyr kind of fun. PS: reversed psychology works with annoying kids !!! |
