"Force nickname" for friends

I am sick and tired of guessing who is who all the time as some people on my friends list keep changing their names every single day.

I would like to force a nickname for friends so that Matt will always show as Matt even though he just changed his name to xX_1337Snip3r_Xx.

While there is always the ability to right click on your friend on the friends list and click View Aliases, I agree, such a feature would make everything a lot more convenient.

But then, what's the point of Matt changing his name to xX_1337Snip3r_Xx if everyone will still see him as Matt?

Not everyone, just people who have forced his name. By default, "everyone" will still see it as what he picked.

I agree with OP at any rate; I do have a couple friends who seem to be facing constant identity crisis and won't stop changing their names.

The "forced" name should be visible along with the players actual name. The forced one to know who the guy really is and his real name to see who he claims himself to be
Sometimes people change their name 20 times in a row so even "view aliases" option doesn't help.

No, I mean that you should be able to set a static nickname for friends on your friendlist, so you can always identify your friends by the same nickname, regardless of what they change it into. People who haven't set a static nickname for him see Matt as xX_1337Snip3r_Xx

I'm pretty sure Windows Live Messenger had this feature. Haven't used it in years though.

I was thinking about just this sort of feature the other day. Good to see I'm not the only one going mad because of all the name changes.
I'd like to either have an option where I can make a user on my friends list always appear by the name he had when I added him, or a way for me to pick what he appears as. It would be really helpful in actually finding the people I'm looking for.
As mentioned above, this would be an OPTION, so everyone who likes all the nickname changes can happily keep doing so

i agree, i change my name when i join a new lobby,
not to "troll" really,
i like making my name something to accompany another person's name,
if someone is named dad then i make my name mom.
its kind of funny, i usually do it out o boredom tho.
sometimes people join in and it gets pretty luls

I do this too. I want them to bring back IN-GAME names then in the player list show the player (IN GAME) name and the steam name in parenthesis.

There was no reason to remove in game player names, besides so the steam community would be universal. Bring it back and adapt it.

View Aliases half the time breaks.
My friend Xyrin changed his name to Heavy Weapons Spy for a while and I had no clue who he was because view aliases said they had gone by no other names.

Good suggestion, in the mean time you can always TAG each friend differently to know who is who.
