Of course, the rank is saved on HD.
You formatted so you lost it.

Lmao! This sucks though. I always thought that the rank was stored on Treyarch's servers.

Just MW2 and BO stats are saved on servers.
Yeah,that's a crappy system.
You can't change your nickname and there's no sense using that.

Actually, it seems they save your created profile names on their servers (associated with your CD key) but nothing else. It is actually pretty silly, maybe a way to keep duplicate names from showing up?

This is the way COD has always been, it's only since the introduction of the steam cloud where things changed. I think it's a much better system as it allows you to not only back up your profile, but you can use it to create a new profile with same prestige etc. Just search for "mw2 rank reset" or "black ops rank reset", you'll be pleased you have total control over matters

Yeah, I prefer local profiles to forced-online profiles.

If I want to start over in CoD 4 or WaW I can just make a new profile. If I want to start over in MW2 or BO I have to start a new Steam account and buy a new copy of the game.

It's a no-brainer, for me.
