What happened to Multiplayer gaming?

Nowadays people just care about their kill death ratio or yelling at the enemies or even their own team.

I remember a time were you could play multiplayer games and not be insulted every 4 seconds, were people would care about completing the objective more than getting kills, were people would give the competitors tips on how to avoid dying that way or counter that weapon/class instead of insulting them.

I play Black Ops on the 360 ( it runs like crap on pc)

I maintain a 3.24 ratio but only a 0.80 ratio I play the objective but I only like playing by myself so I constantly get teamed up against parties so can not win with a level 4 and his guest who are sharing a 19" screen.

I don't give abuse as I don't use a mic and if I anyone messages me for advice I give it to them.

I hate ranking system in MP or achievement unlocking to unlock new weapons and such. I wish MP FPSes were like CS where you have everything unlock but you have a currency to buy it

I wish Battlefield 3 didn't show a kill/death scoreboard. Or even no scoreboard at all would be nice.

Free MMO's are making everything generic.

Hats

GFWL

Cosplay

lack of inovvation

most things are just an update of Quake with pretty graphics, lets try something new!

Games with no server browsers!!! (Kiss me bumm Minecraft and Terraria!)

Yeah, lack of server browsers is totally a game-killing feature and definitely the reason for immaturity in these games' playerbases...

OP, I think it was inevitable, 10-15 years ago gaming and the Internet as a whole was still the geek's domain, nowadays everyone is on there and gaming is popular among all groups. I saw something similar happen to many IRC channels I was hanging out at around the time IRC was dying completely.

For me it was CS:S, our clan was split and it was the end of MP for me.

I've had a couple of goes of my son's MW2 on the 360 and it didn't seem too bad.. Screaming kiddie-wise anyway.
As psihomir2 says, there's a newer demographic and us hardcore* lot notice the shift in the game design. It's not just MP either, SP is affected.

*Dislike this term tbh.

I've been playing online multiplayer games since Doom; I do not remember it ever being anything other than what you described above.

Games have always been like that do you not remember CS before VAC? My god there were cheaters everywhere, same goes for Starcraft map hacking was baaaad.

CS you'd always get cheaters or people who would play annoying music over the microphone for whole matches.

You just notice more people going for more k/d and such because there's more people online now then there was ever, hence there's more K/D pro gamer wannabes.

Short answer - gaming is now catering for the casuals.

Longer answer - gaming is currently catering for the casual gamer and doing more to keep them, while its impossible to compare a game from 10 years ago with games of today, however game companies are choosing to add more and more to these games to increase longevity while not making the game more fun.
