Question about Commander for each team...

So yeah, this game piqued my interest today, since it looks like a blend of Battlefield, COD, and Halo. My question is the somewhat iffy-sounding Commander that each team gets. Do players volunteer to be the Commander, or does a player on each team just randomly become the Commander? Because I'm alot more comfortable with my boots on the ground and taking orders, rather than the other way around...

I BELIEVE the steps are as follows:

Players volunteer themselves
Other players vote.
Upon a tie one of them gets selected at random.

I also (HOPE) the following does NOT occur, commanders being assigned by rank, game of example: BF2, a new player could be a FANTASTIC commander, and a high ranked (older) player could be a TERRIBLE commander, and both go for commander, but because the older player has a higher rank he gets it no matter what...this was a terrible mechanic IMO, I think trial by error is better, if your last commander sucked, don't vote for him/her. That's it.

Unfortunately, the voting system is flawed itself IMO; I'm sure I'm not the only one who "shooed" away the BF2[142] votes by just hitting PgUp/PgDn, regardless of the matter at hand!
Of course, the rationale for said action would be
1. Too busy
2. Annoyed by text
3. Out of spite
4. (Worst) Don't know anything about the candidate/victim

It seems as if 4 is my biggest excuse. If it's a kick vote, I just mash PgUp or PgDn without caring because I have no reason to. Was the player hacking? Maybe an exploiter or padder? Or was the vote out of spite? Same route of logic for commander kicking - if he gives us supply drops every now and then, he gets my "nay" for a kick.

Basically, uninformed, knee-jerk votes (or abstains) will typically dominate most elective issues.

Just fall-back on good old Natural Selection commander days... and kick the idiots that always want to kick the current commander regardless of quality.

Best thing, give people a chance, then decide. You'll always have people just click "1" when the option is 1-4. People usually don't care.

In Savage 2 there was a rating system. After the game you could rate how well commander did. An could vote to replace him. Though honestly a lot of the time it was really sloppy. With commander just kind of going to ever jumped in that spot first. An if they were a noob it was obvious quickly an they got booted an everyone kind of ran around losing the game until some vet gave in an filled the spot.

That's exactly the problem. Ignorant votes that in the worst case scenario, gets a player who doesn't know jack in a position. In your case, it's basically "first come first serve" - whoever turns out to be Mr. One will end up being the most voted.

The problem with Natural Selection (and will be the problem with this game) is that success is primarily based off the skill of the Commander.

In Natural Selection, get a crappy commander for the humans? The game is practically lost.

The same thing will happen here. The team with a crappy commander will be utterly curbstompped into the ground.

I sure hope everyone doesn't try to tell the Commander what to do. Let them do their thing, even if you're losing the game. That's how the truly creative strategies are born.

Plus you can vote them out of their chair, and let someone else take it.

FlyingMongoose has it about right. Players will elect to become commanders in their spawn menu. The game will select one at random.

During the game, you can vote to mutiny your commander, and then another will be chose, always at random, from the pool of remaining candidates.

I hope custom servers, can override this as they see fit.

Does this mean if I don't want to be Commander, the game won't select me at random? That's a relief...

That's pretty much it. If you never click on the 'yes' for Commander selection, you'll never be considered for the role.
