Best mode of transportation in a post-apocalyptic world?

What do you think would be the best mode of transportation in a post-apocalyptic world? Ignoring Waterworld or frozen world scenarios where using a boat or dog sledding team is your only option, which do you think would be best?

A) On Foot
B) Bicycle (Road Bike or Mountain bike)
C) Horseback/Mule/Camel
D) Fourwheeler, Dirtbike, or Buggy
E) Motorcycle
F) Car/Truck
G) Gyrocopter
H) Other???

It seems to me like you could break things down into short/medium/long-term. In the short term a road vehicle of some sort would generally be the best because you can move a lot of resources quickly and get far away (assuming you can start the vehicle and the roads are clear enough -- think escaping a hurricane type of scenario or escaping an atomic blast that you know is coming).

For medium-term survival I'm thinking the first couple of years after a major disaster (nuclear war/zombies/etc) that while a car might seem handy, you're going to have to deal with a lot of debris, abandoned cars, and roads that become all crumbly) as well as noise issues (you might not want zombies/aliens/local bandits to hear you). In addition, gas and breakdown of vehicles might start to become an issue. If you're not worried about noise or gas/parts then moving to a motorcycle or dirt bike might give you more manoeuvrability, but I'm thinking it might be more appropriate to move to a bicycle. Bicycles are generally easy to repair, so as long as you can find parts for it and have the tools and know-how, you're golden. They are also a lot quieter than a car or motorcycle.

So then we get to really long term... the whole rest of your life as well as the lives of your children, and their children, etc... It seems to me that it will eventually become hard to find parts for bicycles and the roads will fairly quickly get eaten away (we have some roads nearby that were abandoned about 20 years ago and they almost don't even exist anymore. Wherever a crack has form vegetation has sprouted up and pushed away the asphalt. Some places the road is just gone.

It seems to me that your only viable transportation is by foot and horseback. At least horses reproduce naturally and you don't need special parts for them. What you do need is a lot of knowledge on how to take care of them and raise them and train them. They can make some noise so the ultimate in stealth would still be on foot, but you can get a lot farther on horseback and carry more stuff (maybe even pull a wagon).

So...
Short term -> Motorcycle or dirt bike (for engine power + manoeuvrability)
Medium term -> Mountain Bike (easy to maintain, fairly quiet, offroad capability)
Long term -> On foot (I don't like horses, they're mean)

What say you?

If fuel isn't an issue.. either a tank or a helicopter for me.

If it is... I'd take either a bike (bicycle) or some animal. P:

You can't pick just one. Different situations need different vehicles.

Limiting yourself in any kind of survival situation gets you killed.

You would also have to consider the fact the roads may be completely blocked with cars.

horseback would make the most sense, but then you run into issues feeding the animal

Those piston legs that allow you to run up to 60km/h. No mutant bears will catch me.

Apparently you guys aren't die-hard zombie fans.

Everyone knows hot-air balloons are the best for apocalypses

Stay up in the air for days
Silent
Safe
Night-Time landings without making a sound
Rooftop landings

I'd say blimp, but those are far too much maintenance.
