Bastion support FAQ (updated Jan 22, 6pm PT)

Hey everyone, first off thank you for your support of Bastion. Our team is dedicated to supporting this launch so rest assured we'll be monitoring this forum closely and working to address any issues that arise. While we shipped the game with no known issues, due to the variety of hardware out there, we couldn't test for every configuration.

I'm going to keep this thread locked and sticky to use it to broadcast announcements. Feel free to start new threads to discuss issues -- we'll read even if we can't respond to them all.

Solutions to Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What to do if the game won't start after I recently downloaded an update through Steam?
A: Please try exiting out of your Steam client and restarting it as a first step. If this does not clear the issue, try the steps below.

Q: What to do if the game is crashing on startup or the components did not install correctly?
A: First off, if the game has crashed on you, please open the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and terminate any instances of the game before trying to start it again.

Next, it's possible that some of your game files were corrupted during the download. Please try "verifying the integrity of your game cache", which will try to detect file corruption and redownload them as needed. Instructions are here:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...2037-QEUH-3335

As next steps, try navigating to this folder, assuming Steam is on your C: drive:
C:\Steam\steamapps\common\bastion\

And run the following files:
dotNetFx35setup.exe
dxwebsetup.exe
xnafx31_redist.msi

Lastly, please try closing other running programs if you're still having trouble starting the game. Some players have reported that this made a difference for them.

Q: I downloaded the Soundtrack or the Soundtrack Edition and can't seem to find the music files. Where are they located?
A: Assuming you installed Steam to your C: drive, check the following location:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\bastion\Supergiant Games - Bastion Original Soundtrack

We're sorry if you had any trouble finding the music files.

Q: What to do if the game is crashing on startup or experiencing graphical corruption issues?
A: As a starting point, make sure you have the latest graphics drivers installed from your card's manufacturer. An outdated driver is the most common source of these types of problems.

Q: I have a multi-monitor, Eyefinity, or multi-graphics card setup, and the game is crashing or experiencing issues. What should I do?
A: Please try disabling this type of setup and see if it resolves the issue. We are investigating specific cases for possible updates.

Q: What do I do if I start the game up and the display is black but I can hear sound?
A: Try running the game using the -windowed and -noborder Launch Options (for instructions on how to do this, Ctrl + F "Launch Options" further down this page).

Q: What do I do if the game flickers in a distracting way while in full-screen mode?
A: Same as above.

Q: What do I do if I have a multi-monitor setup and the game is launching on the wrong monitor?
A: Same as above.

Q: What do I do if the game is launching at the wrong resolution and I am unable to adjust it to the correct setting in game?
A: Use the -x [value] and -y [value] launch options to force the game to run at the desired resolution.

Q: I changed the in-game resolution, how can I restore the original settings?
A: The game will auto-detect your monitor's proper resolution on start-up. If you change your resolution and the proper one is not available in the options menu, you can have it auto-detect again by deleting your profile here (exact location may vary):
\Program Files\Steam\userdata\33142021\107100\local

Q: What should I do if the in-game text does not display correctly, showing code IDs instead of the intended text?
A: A small number of players have encountered this issue, which causes in-game text to not display correctly. Most of these cases were resolved simply by restarting the game.

If the problem persists, try using the launch option -lang en (assuming you are running the game in English)). To set Launch Options, right-click on Bastion in your Steam game library, select Properties, then click on "Set Launch Options..." Then start the game as normal.

Q: I have other questions, where should I turn?
A: Feel free to ask here in the forums or email support@supergiantgames.com and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Known Issues
These are issues we are aware of and seeking to address in a future update. Due to the nature of this process we cannot give an exact time estimate for the update.

- We're aware that for some users, the game is running at a locked frame rate that is less than the intended 60 fps. The "-nofixedstep" commandline parameter has resolved this issue for many players.

- We are also working to add compatibility with some gamepads other than the Microsoft Xbox 360 controller for Windows. In the mean time, users have reported some workarounds you may want to try (though we cannot officially support them):
http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=2061495
http://www.motioninjoy.com/download
http://code.google.com/p/x360ce/

- While our recent updates address various known crash cases reported by users, we are continuing to investigate these reports.

- We are aware of a rare issue where text does not display correctly in the game, showing code IDs instead of the intended text. There is a solution to this issue in the FAQ section above.

If you are experiencing any other issues with the game, please feel free to contact us via the supergiantgames.com web site.

Thank you for reading. This post will be updated with the latest FAQs and known issues. Below this we will post when updates are available.

Our first update should be going out now. Exit out of the game to apply it. The fixes include:

- Leaderboard crash due to some SteamIDs using alphanumeric characters not supported by our in-game fonts

- Issue where menu pickboxes become too small when running the game at the lowest resolution setting

- Issue where the first How to Play screen can crash for those using a gamepad.

We will continue monitoring the feedback in this thread and via email. To those of you who've experienced any issues with the launch of the game, we appreciate your patience.

Our third update for Bastion should be out now, addressing several issues reported by players as well as adding some advanced settings. This update will be applied automatically when players restart their Steam client. The change list includes:

- Fixed an issue in which the game would not detect local saved data if players lost their connection to Steam cloud storage

- Fixed an issue where remapping the Left Trigger and Right Trigger gamepad controls fired the default commands unexpectedly

- Fixed an issue in Roathus Lagoon that could cause players to get locked out of the level's final area

- Added support for several advanced command-line parameters (aka Launch Options in Steam).

To set Launch Options in Steam, right-click on Bastion inyour game library, select Properties, then select Set Launch Options.

NOTE: Please be advised that these settings are recommended for advanced users and may adversely affect your game experience.

The parameters are:

-isomovement
Using the default Slinger-style WASD controls, diagonal movements will more closely adhere to the isometric perspective. We would appreciate your feedback about this change.

-windowed
Forces the game to start in windowed mode.

-x [value]
Forces the game to a specific X resolution.

-y [value]
Forces the game to a specific Y resolution.

Example: to run the game in 1280x720 (720p) resolution:"-windowed -x 1280 -y 720"

-noborder
Runs the game in windowed mode but with no windows titlebar or border. (This may improve compatibility or performance versus full-screen mode in some cases or provide a preferable experience.)

-deadzone [value]
Allows a custom joystick dead zone for players experiencingissues with their gamepads. Value is the fraction at which input should register. Example: "-deadzone 0.4".

-lang [value]
Forces the game to load a specific text language. Available options are "en", "fr", "it","de", and "es" for English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish, respectively. Example: "-lang de"

-nofixedstep
Turns off fixed time step so that the game no longer dictates the frame rate. (This may improve performance for some users but may also lead to erratic performance in other cases.)

Thank you for playing Bastion.

Hey, our fourth update should be out there now, once again addressing various issues reported by players as well as adding several enhancements. This update will be applied automatically when players restart their Steam client. The change list includes:

- Updated the default "Slinger-style" WASD controls to make the character move relative to the isometric perspective.

NOTE: In the previous update, this required using a commandline parameter "-isomovement", which is no longer necessary. To restore the original setting, use the new commandline parameter "-orthomovement".

- In-game menus now respond to right-clicking as well as left-clicking. One for the lefties!

- Added support for resolutions greater than 1920x1080, at which visual issues with the background visuals could occur.

- Fixed several issues that were causing the game to crash for some players.

- Fixed an issue in Burstone Quarry that could cause players to get locked out of the level's final area.

- Fixed an issue in Mt. Zand that could cause players to get locked out of the level's final area.

- Fixed an issue in Zulten's Hollow that caused the level's weapon pickup animation not to play.

- Fixed an issue in the Bullhead Trial where the text stated that the Gold Prize requirement involved completing the trial having taken less than two hits instead of three.

- Fixed an issue causing the opening splash screens to overlap when running the game using the "-nofixedstep" commandline parameter, which unlocks the frame rate.

- Fixed a rare issue where weapon slots at the Arsenal could become unselectable.

We plan to continue updating the game in the coming days at this cadence. Thank you for playing.

Hey, our seventh update should be deploying today. It addresses several issues and adds support for other alphabets, enabling translations in other languages. This update will be applied automatically when players restart their Steam client. The change list includes:

- Fixed an issue that caused Secret Skills to sometimes become unselectable after successive play-throughs of the game.

- Fixed an issue that could cause the Man-at-Arms achievement not to unlock when expected.

- Fixed an issue that could cause weapon upgrades of the same tier to both become selected in the Forge.

- Fixed an issue causing Bastion.exe to not exit cleanly as intended.

- Added custom language support for alphabets based on Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic, to support requests for player-created translations to other languages.
To add a custom language to the game, follow these steps:

1. Determine the two-letter language code according to ISO 639-1
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ISO_639-1_codes)

e.g. Portuguese = pt, Russian = ru, Polish = pl

The following example is for creating a Russian (ru) translation.

2. Navigate to Steam\steamapps\common\bastion\Content\Game\Text, and make a copy of HelpText.en.xml called HelpText.ru.xml.

3. Translate the text in HelpText.ru.xml from English to Russian. At the top of the file, make sure the line reads: <HelpText lang="ru">

4. Create a folder in Steam\steamapps\common\bastion\Content\Subtitles\r u

5. Copy over the files in Steam\steamapps\common\bastion\Content\Subtitles\e n, and translate them.

6. Launch the game with '-lang ru' Launch Options
(for Launch option instructions: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...1040-JWMT-2947)

Thanks to those of you expressing interest in taking the time to create fan translations and for playing.

Note: To access the Stranger's Dream sequence as well as Score Attack Mode, you need to have finished the game at least once. The Stranger’s Dream sequence will be available early on in your New Game Plus or Score Attack play-through.

- No-Sweat Mode: for those who just want to experience the story of Bastion, this mode provides unlimited chances to carry on from where you left off if you’re defeated in battle.

- Added two new Leaderboards for the Stranger's Dream and Score Attack Mode.

- Added four new Steam Achievements! They are:

Ride the Wind
Use the Skyway in the Wharf District.

All in the Mind
Complete the Stranger's Dream with five or more Shrine Idols invoked.

About the Author
Complete the Stranger's Dream with all ten Shrine Idols invoked.

Hard Bargain
Earn a total of at least 1,000,000 points in Score Attack Mode.

- Fixed an issue in Prosper Bluff that could cause players to get stuck in a specific area.

- Fixed an issue in the final area of the game where players could fall through the environment unexpectedly.

- Fixed some English-language subtitles.

We hope you enjoy the new content! Thanks everyone for your continued support of this game.
