Thumbs up Don's L4D2 autoexec - a user-friendly config for both competitive and coop players!

Don's Left 4 Dead 2 autoexec

Version 3.0

(Download links below the features)

Hello, this thread is about my Left 4 Dead 2 config/autoexec for the community.
I started making my own autoexec back then in Left 4 Dead before Left 4 Dead 2 was released, kept improving it over time, switched over to L4D2 and earlier this year, I started making a public version of it and linked it on my Steam profile page.
I have put quite a lot of work in it and had many dozen friends and friends of friends download and use my config.
Now I also want to publish it here on the Steam forums to reach more people and spread it out more.
This is config is geared towards players of competitive gamemodes such as Versus and Scavenge, with a lot of different changes to make for a better game experience.
However, most of its features will also be useful for campaign players. I have even attached a separate version with a few changes specially for cooperative gamemodes.

Features:
I will list some of the major features here together with explanations and screenshots.

Improved connection settings

The default client-side connection settings of the Source Engine which control how data is send to and received by the server are pretty bad. This is also (but not only) due to the fact that they were chosen back in 2003 or so and since, the average internet connection of players has improved, while the default settings have not.

My config changes these settings to better utilize your internet connection, and give you a better gameplay experience.

Massively improved glows (outlines)

Most of the glows have been changed to be a lot better visible.
Besides, survivor teammates who have been puked on will glow purple just like from the view of the infected, so you can tell whether a teammate is just getting pulled for example, or is also puked on.
Also, the glow color of unspawned infected teammates (in ghost mode) has been changed to white. Normally, both spawned and unspawned infected glow blue. Now you can tell from the glow color whether an infected teammate is spawned or not.

Here are four example screenshots showing all the glows from different views:

And here are four animated images showing the differences between the default glows and those of my config:

http://www.abload.de/image.php?img=g..._anima4mbj.gif

A lot of useful custom key binds and scripts

My config includes a lot of custom binds. As opposed to other configs which often mess up your key bindings unless you manually edit the config file yourself, I have added a few new sections to the regular key bindings menu at the bottom, where you can easily assign them to keys of your choice.
See for yourself:

http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/54...F51F5F71390A5/
http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/54...F973320CF70FA/

You decide which of these you want to bind! And you decide on which keys!

As an example, this is how the "Display information about the current server" script can look like if you bind and press it: http://www.abload.de/image.php?img=s...eck_exq8jt.jpg

And a lot more... you can check below for a full list if you want to.

Download:
Installation instructions are included in the downloads.

Regular competitive version: http://www.mediafire.com/?it9tjlolkkm5lap

Most players of competitive gamemodes such as Versus or Scavenge should download this.

Alternative competitive version - 66.7 lerp: http://www.mediafire.com/?7kebj7z79p4298v

If you downloaded the regular version, and after some time still feel that you can't get used to slightly jerky looking common infected animations, or even have unlikely and more serious issues such as seeing other players (survivors, special infected..) lag around, download this version.
For more information about lerp, please refer to this guide: http://www.l4dnation.com/general-dis...guide-v2-3-4c/

Extra cooperative version: http://www.mediafire.com/?k0uggcj8h89vbwv

If you barely ever touch any competitive gamemodes and only play campaign and such, this version is for you.

Have fun!

PS: If you like my config, then feel free to make a post stating that to keep the thread up top. :]

Full list of features/changes
For those who care, a full list of features/changes of the regular competitive version in order of the config, copied from the Readme.

Quote:
  • A lot of useful custom binds and scripts that you can easily assign to keys of your choice via the regular in-game options menu at the new sections at the bottom.
  • Full captions turned on. They warn you you about special infected and other stuff in the subtitles.
  • Custom server content download disabled. Not necessary on L4D2 and prevents some silly servers from uploading crap to your L4D2 directory.
  • Changed default spectator mode to free roam so you get a better overview.
  • Disconnect from a server after 30 seconds of timeout. Useful when a server crashes so you don't have to wait one full minute.
  • Console enabled.
  • Stereo sound quality set to high.
  • Film grain effect disabled. It's just kinda disturbing normally.
  • Music volume set to the maximum. Best chances to hear tank/witch music and some other stuff controlled by music volume.
  • Free spectator look enabled. Press the jump key to cycle between first-person, third-person and free roam.
  • Re-enables voice-ingame in case you disabled it during a previous game session.
  • Increased voice-ingame receive volume to the maximum to better hear other players.
  • Better connection settings including five lerp options (0, 16.7, 33.4, 50.1 and 66.7) to choose from, with default lerp 16.7. Pays out in general and especially for skeeting/deadstopping hunters and jockeys.
  • Additional connection settings presets. These are mainly for testing purposes and changing settings quickly via the console, you can normally ignore them.
  • Dynamic crosshair disabled to allow better aiming with a crosshair that is not jumping around.
  • Colorblind mode for crosshair enabled. Makes it a white crosshair with a black surrounding which is perfectly visible no matter which background.
  • Massively improved glows. Besides that survivor teammates hit by puke now glow purple and unspawned infected teammates (ghost mode) now glow white, most glows are a lot more visible.
  • Pulsating glows disabled. Normally in effect when survivors have any temporary health. They don't REALLY help but can be pretty annoying.
  • While holding TAB you can also see the netgraph (ping, fps, lerp, packet loss etc.) now.
  • Custom script to toggle between the maximum brightness (including a special console command) for better visibility and normal brightness for better atmosphere. Does not change brightness unless you use it. Bind it via the in-game options menu.
  • A few presets of European Confogl servers that you can force from a lobby. While these are normally used by random people, keep in mind nevertheless that in general just because you are able to connect to a server, it does not automatically mean that you are also allowed to use it for matches, so use these at your own discretion. Also, some of the IPs might not work anymore after some time if an owner makes changes to his server structure. The console commands are: pwg, l4d2tv, gm or pixie
  • Custom script to show important information about the current server in a convenient way. Bind it via the in-game options menu. The formatting does not work well on servers where the wait command is disabled.
  • Custom script to show the server ConVars enforced by Confogl if you are playing on a Confogl server in matchmode. Bind it via the in-game options menu. Note that this script will completely break and only produce garbage in your console on servers where the wait command is disabled. (Damn those servers.)
  • Custom script to toggle third-person view with a better camera view, and the option to zoom in/out with the mousewheel - works only in cooperative gamemodes. Bind it via the in-game options menu.
  • Custom script to change the playback speed of a demo with the mousewheel. Bind it via the in-game options menu and press it to enable it. Then scroll up/down to increase/decrease speed or click the wheel to set it back to normal speed. Press the bind again to restore normal mousewheel functionality.
  • Custom scripts to toggle display of the crosshair, the complete crosshair (includes fatigue circle, infected crosshair, infected recharge circle), the gun viewmodel including the flashlight and the complete HUD. They can be used if you want to disable the HUD when capturing a video from a recorded demo, or want to roam around freely using the "Drive" feature without having the gun model on your screen. Bind them via the in-game options menu.

Note that if there is a certain feature that you don't like, you can easily change or disable it in the autoexec.cfg config file. All commands in the config have comments assigned to them, also displaying the default values of these. If you just want to disable a command, you can comment the line by adding two slashes // infront of it, resulting in the game treating everything on that line as a comment and ignoring it.

Here is an example of how the crosshair section of my config looks like:
(Opened in Notepad++ with tab size 8, Bespin theme and C++ syntax language highlighting)

One of the most complete and useful autoexec/config packages I've seen. The custom keybind stuff is especially useful.

+rep. Try this out especially if you don't have an existing autoexec.

I assume it's fair to say VAC doesn't have a problem with this, but does your package work on pure servers?

Since it doesn't change any gamefiles, yes.

sv_pure currently doesn't work anyways tho, the only thing that works are VALVe's official dedicated blocking people from using any custom addons like modified HUDs etc.

VAC shouldn't have a problem with it since it's all stuff you can do with the console command in game without needing cheats to be on. It should also work on pure servers.

I probably could for ease of installation... however, config files don't make that much sense in a vpk if you ask me.
The good thing about configs like this is that all the files are plain text, so everyone can open them with any text editor and see what they do, how, and edit it if they like.
If you put it in a vpk that gets a lot more complicated, might as well say impossible.

Great post Don Sanchez. Thanks for this autoexec.
+rep plus 5 stars.

But I was wondering if you could make one with just the improved glows (outlines) and the improved connection settings since I don't need the other binds. If you could do this then I would be thankful forever.

Well of course I would suggest you just use the whole package as you can probably benefit from the other stuff too, but if thats what you desire, sure, I sent you the link.

How do I take these features off? I hate the caption and prefer to have servers upload to me.

Code:
cl_downloadfilter "none"; // Disables custom server content download. (Default: all)
closecaption "1"; // Enables captioning. (Default: 0)
Change these to the default values, like this:

Code:
cl_downloadfilter "all"; // Disables custom server content download. (Default: all)
closecaption "0"; // Enables captioning. (Default: 0)
