It dosen't exactly give me the option. Yellowdog looks like it has its own "special" bootloader, probably because of the way the PPCs are set up (it's a G4 733 model. They won't give me a G5).

Wow, you've gotten a lot of misinformation on this topic. I normally lurk, but when I saw that you've been running through so many hoops pointlessly, I thought I'd lend a hand. Sorry it took awhile to initialize my account

The short answer is: Don't try. It won't work, even with Linux on that machine (PPC).

wab G-vld actually mentioned the answer. The problem is that the software was compiled for the x86 architecture (Intel/AMD). Trying to run the software on PPC won't work... Valve should really note the architecture their software runs on, especially since Linux runs on so many different architectures (e.g. x86, alpha, ppc, Motorola 68k, etc).

To run the software on your Mac, the very least Valve would have to recompile the software for Linux PPC.
I've read some threads that various companies are having a heck of a time porting the physics engine to the Mac. I'd guess that the physics engine is (at least partially) written in assembly. Any/all assembly would need to be rewritten specifically for the PPC as well.

If you were running a 2Ghz+ G5 setup I'd recommend trying out Virtual PC with a lean version of Linux running on it (perhaps Ubuntu), but since you said that it's only a 700mhz G4, I don't know if I could even recommend the time to try it out even if you had Virtual PC already installed.

Sorry for the bad news, but it's better than being stringed along!
