Stuck in offline mode

Hi, I've searched the internet for a topic regarding this problem, but haven't been able to find a solution. For the last few days, Steam has been stuck in offline mode and can't be changed.

It's apparently unable to access the Steam servers, but changing servers makes no difference. I've tried renaming clientregistry.blob, but rather than creating a new file it makes me unable to access Steam at all. I've checked for spyware but not come up with any problems.

I'm currently unable to play any game which requires me to sync files with the Steam Cloud. I would assume that the Steam servers are just currently down, but my friends seem not to be having the same problem.

Can you try the following:

a) <Right-Click> "Steam" icon, select "Run As Admin..."

b) If that fails, reboot into "Safe Mode with Networking" and try a) again:

Unfortunately the option to run as admin requires a password I don't have access to. Is there another way to resolve it? I'm hoping I don't have to reinstall Steam entirely.

I see, from your earlier description, it seems like Steam is unable to get a network connection established.

Can you try the following:
  1. Navigate to your Steam installation "\..\Program Files\Steam\"

  2. <Right-click> on "Steam.exe" and select [Create Shortcut]

  3. <Right-click> on the new shortcut and go to [Properties]

  4. Select the [Shortcut] tab.

  5. In the (Target: ) field add the launch option like so:
    "\...\Steam\Steam.exe" -tcp
  6. Click [Apply] and then [OK] to close the [Properties] window.

  7. Execute Steam by double-clicking the shortcut

Yeah, that sounds like the problem I'm having (on checking, I'm not actually stuck in offline mode; it's in online mode, but won't connect to the Steam server)

I'm just waiting for the computer with Steam to restart, then I'll try that solution. I've read it once before and it didn't work that time, but I may have implemented it wrong (the explanation wasn't completely clear). Thanks.

Okay, I found the problem. It turned out that another program (PeerBlock) was interfering with Steam. I'm not sure why that's just now become a problem because I've been using the two together for a while, but setting PeerBlock to ignore Steam allowed me to connect again. Thanks for the help anyway!
