Windows or OSX?

In windows just type "steamapps" into the start menu search box.

If it's Windows with a standard install it should be:

C:\Program Files\Steam

The games themselves are stored in the Steamapps folder.

To be honest, from the rambling OP, I didn't think the OP was asking where his games are stored. I though he was complaining about his Steam files disappearing on him and he trying to find out why.

What audio files are you looking for? For a specific game, Steam audio files or something else?

Would depend on the game. If it has accessible audio files theyd be in the steamapps folder somewhere in the folder for that specific game.

Not all games have easily accessible audio files, especially if the dev is also selling a soundtrack

Don't forget when looking for files to make sure all files are unhidden or you will never find them.

can't you just search windows for the hexen folder?

can't you just google for the hexen sound files , I found them easy for hexen 2.

The location of the Hexen game folders should be like this-
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\hexen
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\hexen 2
for example.

They are pretty old games so the sound files might not be easy to find, as Angus Kart said "Not all games have easily accessible audio files".
To add onto that, with some games the sounds are integrated into the game itself so there are no sound files to find.
You probably would have more luck googling something like "hexen sound files" or something like that to be honest.
