Switching Classes (Blunt-weapon Logan, Throwing Sam B, Sharp Purna, etc.)

Got a soft spot for Logan's gruffness, but would rather crush with a two-hander over throwing weapons around? Want to slice up a fool with Sam B? Shoot with Xian? Throw with Purna?

Switch up your character archetypes!

Disclaimer: This has not been thoroughly tested. It is confirmed that Logan gained Sam B's abilities (tested with the Support tree's Health Regeneration) and on Sam B with the boomerang ability. On the surface, all seems to work. Skills trees are switched. Whether this functions properly online, and whether level progression works as it should, remains to be tested.

If you experiment with this, post your results!


1) Open up Data0.pak

2) Under Skills, extract:

logan_levels.xml
logan_skills.xml
samb_levels.xml
samb_skills.xml
purna_levels.xml
purna_skills.xml
xian_levels.xml
xian_skills.xml


3) Rename the character's skills/levels files to the character you wish to play.
(Ie. to play a blunt-weapon wielding Logan, I would rename samb_levels.xml to logan_levels.xml, samb_skills.xml to logan_skills.xml.)

4) Open up the appropriate xxxx_skills.xml file
(Ie. Following the above example, open logan_skills.xml)

The first line will read: <character_req value="xxxx_levels.xml">

Change this line so that value="xxxx_levels.xml" is the same as the name of the file.
(ie. Again, following the above example, the line would be changed from value="samb_levels.xml" to value="logan_levels.xml")

5) Place your modified files in "my documents/DeadIsland/out/Data/Skills"

Ethan: Its probably best applied in a single-player playthrough, but its part of the modding effort, and its been confirmed that modding isn't going to get you VAC banned. This is the first step to modding the skill trees.

Med_Rare: Its mostly a cosmetics change. I didn't much care for Sam B's character. The voice acting got on my nerves fast, and I wanted to see if I could later try another playthrough using Logan, but trying out Sam's skills.

This indeed does seem to work. I got the regen buff from the survival tree and the force on blunt weapons for the middle tree while playig Logan with SamB's skill tree.

However, I have to report that if you do this, then you will NOT be able to use the Fury skill of the character skill set your trying to play. As Logan, whenever I use Fury, even though I have SamB's haymaker tagged in my skill tree menu, it does not do SamB's fury skill. It shows logan trying to get out his knives.

Even then, I cant even use it. So unless you can figure out how to fix fury, then your stuck without it if you want to use this mod.

Also, ramming locked doors doesnt work as Logan.

I can confirm the part about fury as well. I gave Xian the skills from Purna. They showed up correctly ingame, but when i activated fury, she drew her knife instead of a gun. I was able to swing it and damage enemies (at melee range).

Hmmm, doesn't work for me. I did exactly as you suggested:

Extracted the Skills and Levels files for all characters.
Changed xian_skills and xian_levels to logan (so Logan can use Xian's skill trees).
Changed the line <character_req value="xian_levels.xml"> to logan.
Moved all the Skills and Levels files to Documents\DeadIsland\out\Data\Skills.

But when I start a new game with Logan, his skill trees are not changed.

Nope. Adding additional files into Documents folder without modifying any game file, not to mention any DLL/exe isn't considered as cheating. There is an official response from Valve in the mod thread.
