Did you try all the possible fixes?

1. If you're using dual monitors, disable one of the monitors.

DEAD ISLAND BLACK SCREEN FIXES:

----

From Steam Forum User Wild:

Hi,
Dead Island BLACK SCREEN starting game up... Ive not had any issues but a friend has, after many hours of trying to help him we got a fix in the end.
Give it ago it work for him .

1. Go into "steam\steamapps\common\dead island"

2. Right Click on "DeadIslandGame.exe" and click "Properties"

3. On the "Compatibility" tab, check "Disable desktop composition"

----

From Steam Forum User saintex13:

here is a solution that I found in the forums.
Helped me, hope it will help you guys too..

1)Go to: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dead island\DI\Data"

2)Locate the game.ini file

3)Locate the line that says "Locale("En")"

4)Change the line to: "Locale("en")"
(without the "")

Hope I helped some guys here =]

From Steam Forum User unbuiltnuke:

I stumbled across this yesterday night while trying to fix my black screen issue. It's fairly simple although you may have to keep doing it until a patch is released.
anyway, here goes.
Follow the file path
Documents/DeadIsland/out/Settings/ There will be 2 files. A
Video.scr file and an Audio.scr file. Select the Video.scr file, and right click it. From that menu, bring up the properties window. There should be a tab on the far right that says "Previous Versions" Select it, and there should be a previous version of the file from when you first bought the game(It will have the date on it). Select it and click restore. You will get a warning message, click ok, and try running the game. It should run fine.

P.S. I think that you will have to do this every time you restart steam, as the game syncs/updates automatically.

Good luck guys!!!
5. Download and install the latest version of Microsoft C++ Compiler.

I don't know about with the disc.
And when you run a game on Steam for the first time it runs a couple things, like DirectX and Microsoft C++ Compiler.
I've had to install Microsoft C++ Compiler for 2 games to get them to work and not just load in to a black screen.

EDIT: Sorry it's the Visual C++ Redistributable.
-_-
