Game locks up and freezes computer after playing for a while.

Just got this game on Steam while on sale. I love the game (had the xbox version) and wanted to get the PC version to try out the mods. However the game always totally freezes up after I play it for approx 10 minutes or so. The music keeps playing but everything else freezes and when it does I can't alt-back to desktop and have to hard reset my computer.

I tried the tricks this from here :
http://www.tweakguides.com/SWB2_1.html.

I unticked CPU 1-3 and left CPU 0 ok. That didn't work. Tried running in compatibility mode (98) and that didn't work. For the record I have win XP. I am really disappointed about this.

Any workarounds or fixes that may work? Anyone able to run if efficiently on an XP machine?

Thanks.

You can try turning down the Graphic settings, located in the Options menu.

If that doesn't help, you can try to troubleshoot crashes from the article below.

Yeah.. sounds like the graphics are the issue. It sounds like the graphics card is heating up and cutting out on you. Lower settings will prevent it from heating up so fast. May need to blow out your fans or the inside of your comp. You shouldn't have to run in compatibility mode. Comp specs?

Dell Inspiron 530

Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 Quad CPU

Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz

2.39 GHz, 3.25 GB of RAM

Graphics Card =
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT

All of my other games work fine. L4D1& 2, check. World of Warcraft, check. Doom 3, check. Spore, check.

Since my first post I installed the lastest up-to-date drivers for the video card and played without a freeze last night, but I never kept playing a match more than 5 minutes. Hopefull that the new drivers may have solved the problem but going to try to play longer to see if it freezes/locks up again.

I think I'm in the clear. Updated my graphics card drivers and so far, so good. Keeping fingers crossed.

Thanks for the replies.

No problem. Glad it's finally working like normal.

Have a great day.
