Old laptop won't read burnt discs/ copy
So I gave my laptop to my dad some time ago, who's saying some of his old burnt music CDs wont' read in the disc drive. Original discs work, and a handful of burnt copies of whatever he listens to work also. This never occurred with his much older laptop, so I figured it must be my old laptop's disc drive.
The laptop is a ASUS f8sp1 using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. The combo burner in question is a TSST corp TS-L632h ATA combo drive. Edit: After some troubleshooting it seems that it might well be the brand of CDRs my dad uses; all other burnt CDs that aren't a Philips brand reads, but so far all Philips CDRs don't. ;/ |

Does it play Music CDs, run Game install thru CDs/DVDs without any issue?
The type of CD-R could be a problem, but depending on how old the laptop is the drive could just be going bad. |

Optical Drives have historically, always been rather fickle about what disks they were and were not willing to read.
some drives just don't like certain brands or dye colors. Older discs may simply not work after awhile either. They do not "wear out" per to say, but they don't maintain integrity forever either. all you can do is clean the laser lens (just use a lint free cloth and some isopropyl Alcohol), or at worst, replace the drive. |

You should check for a firmware update for that drive. As new disks are manufactured, the drive needs to use new methods to read/write to those disks. If there is no firmware update, you will either need to purchase a new drive or purchase older media the drive currently recognizes to use.
