60 FPS cap on 120hz monitor = super annoying
Alright, I can't believe this. I have a 120 hz monitor, and I can only use half the refresh rate? More tearing for no good reason? Two GTX 570s, and I'm in choppy judder land because of an arbitrary decision by the almighty Carmack, who once loved PC gaming but now doesn't have time for us non-standardized (aka non-console) users.
Unreal. Can anyone figure out how to uncap the framerate? And hopefully John hasn't locked this down for some ill-conceived greater good, like he did in Doom 3. In that game, uncapping the framerate would ruin the physics. Very annoyed. I guess I won't be buying Doom 4 on launch day, that's for damn sure. And I don't want to hear a single idiot telling me you can't see more than 60hz. The same for anyone suggesting V-sync; I didn't buy a 120hz monitor so I can run with v-sync (and the associated mouselag). Man, I'd love to talk to Carmack in person... I bet I'd be able to read the "I'm sorry man, we needed to for consoles!" all over his face. |

Yeah, really should support 120hz. Carmack was talking about 120hz vs 60hz in his twitter not terribly long ago as well.

my 120hz monitor is also capped at 60fps.
i think the devs of this game had no idea that 120Hz monitors even existed.. pretty sad. |

Wow, when Carmack said that Rage would be a 60Hz game and Doom 4 would be a 30Hz game, I had no idea he meant that they would be FRIGGEN CAPPED AT THOSE RATES ON THE PC. Has he been huffing rocket fuel or something?

Yeah. Well, kind of. If it's capable of interpolating a 60fps signal up to 120Hz, then it's theoretically capable of displaying 120Hz native, but some of the displays might not accept the signal.
It gets even more confusing when you consider that most TVs aren't listed by their actual capabilities, but by whatever garbage motion interpolation software they use. Hackers have pushed plenty of "120Hz" tvs way, way past that mark. Bottom line, don't buy a friggen TV for PC gaming unless you really know what you're doing. Most of them cause all kinds of problems. Safer to stick with a real monitor. |

Anyone who has gamed on a 120Hz monitor in a game with a PC that can actually give them 120FPS can tell you that this is incorrect. A quick search on Google brings up tests that the USAF did where pilots could identify planes that they had seen for only 1/220th of a second.

let me guess, your first monitor screen was a ♥♥♥♥ty lcd ? I even noticed the difference when I used to play unreal tournament on a 120hz crt monitor without the crappy lcd lag and ghosting. Last edited by Kaedex: 10-04-2011 at 07:30 PM. |
