Thoughts on Serious Sam: The Random Encounter
I know it has not been out for long, but any first impressions. For 4$, its a great price too.

The Trailer and "Wtf is..." looks pretty cool
only thing i worry about is replayability. but its only $4 if you own a Serious Sam title so hard to complain |

Some good cheesy fun. I only played the first couple levels and thought it was okay. It didn't hook me like some of the other recent indie games.

Since it is 20% off, I went ahead and bought it. I haven't had much time to play it yet, but it looks like a fun indie game.

It also has an endless mode. But I bought it just to support Jan Willem Nijman for all the free games he made that I love (Pixel Warlords, Go Go Marine Squad, Pro Killer Man, 10800 Zombies, and Smallness). Wish he'd fleshed out most of those games though.

I'm at stage 3-3 right now. The game is hard, really hard. I have nearly 10 - 15 game over screen per level.
Countless enemies and your weapons seems completely ineffective. Right now it's just a very frustrating game. |

I just bought it and damn, it's really quite hard. I mean the enemies just shoot one million freaking pew pew stuff at you and it's damn difficult to dodge. :E
If there was a way to be able to use items outside of combat, would make it a whole lot easier. xD Anywho, I'll get through it eventually, I think. Kudos for a different view on side-scroll combat though. Really like it!

I've only been playing it for an hour or so, here's a few thoughts I'd like to share.
It gets quite hard after a while. I'm currently stuck at level 3-3 and I keep helplessly dying. Dodging gets quite pointless, but you can still use movement to adjust your aiming so that's fine. One thing I find quite punishing is having to stick to your last weapon loadout everytime you have a new encounter. As far as I can see, choosing the right weapons according to the enemies you're facing is crucial, and losing most of the first round by having to swap weapons gets quite punishing. Having a "setup" phase (i.e. no swapping delays) at the beginning of each fight would definitely enhance strategy, but I guess that's not what the developers meant the game to be like. On the good side, I like that the Game Over lets you restart at the beginning of the chamber and not at the beginning of the world/game. That makes it less frustrating. As for the rest, I love the concept, the music, the art, I think Vlambeer are a great team. |
