Proton Stream Money Maker

When I use the proton stream to hit cars and other objects, I see money racking up in the upper left corner but I get none of it. Is this just points or something?

It is how much damage you causing. The ghostbusters have done some sort of deal with the mayor's office so that the city pays the bill for any damage you cause. So it is effectively just points. "Haha, you've just cause several thousand dollars worth of damage."
