Its turn based, and Geneforge 1 is one of my all time top RPGs

Yeah, if you can get past the retro graphics (although the graphics do get slightly better as the series progressed), these are some of the best RPGs ever made, in my opinion. The Geneforge series has its highs and lows, but over all I think they are definitely the best RPGs that Spiderweb made.
Plus, 16 dollars is a really good price. If you play all of them it's like 400+ hours of content. If you're a fan of old-school RPGs there's really not a better deal on steam right now. Last edited by colorado: 11-02-2011 at 08:27 PM. |

I'm not totally sold on it yet, but if you head over to their main website they've demos for most of the series. So try out a few and see if it fits your style. Currently tried out the 3rd in the series and the demo lets you get a fair distance in to experience things.

I'm loving it, although I'm only playing #1 atm. There's just something about the story that grips you - it's so well done that it pulls you in, and the carppy graphics don't really matter any more.
I was reticent about getting it, but I am *so* glad I did. Do try the demo and see what you think. |

Best goddam game ever. Give yourself a little time to get past the graphics, as dave_ pointed out. Once you do, you will enjoy yourself immensely. I played this game as a kid and bought the saga without blinking as soon as it was released on steam. I have something like 400 hours on G1 and am really excited to play through the rest. Its story remains the best one I have ever experienced in an RPG, or any game to boot, and by a large margin. Worth every penny of the cost.

As others have said, try the demo. You'll know then if you like the game or not. I'm playing Geneforge 5 right now and like it a lot. I bought the whole series and have no regrets. That's a lot of hours of gameplay for the $$.

Got it on sale today. I've only played for an hour or two but I am really enjoying it! I love the attention to detail and the writing. The combat mechanics are a bit clunky but I guess it will take some getting used to. Overall, it is an absolute steal for 10 euro's! I'm really looking forward to diving in!

I echo what everyone else is saying.
The format of the games may be a turn off for some (graphics lite, text heavy). But since the writing is actually very good if you enjoy fantasy you'll most likely love these games. |

I've already put two hours into the game. Get past your bias against the old school aesthetics (I actually rather enjoy them), pick a good soundtrack and I can see hundreds of hours of enjoyment coming from this.
Well written and thought out. If you've played any of the original Fallouts you'll know what to expect. |

Oh, it's a great game for the price and the replay value. Also, something that people haven't said: the creations look so cool. My favorite would be the drayk, but the drakon, glaahk, artila, wingbolt, clawbug, etc all look fantastic. It's just a bit fun going on quests with your pets.

I have a bad habit of buying too many games on sales, even the games I'm not sure about.
For some reason this game caught my eye in the featured games (though it was not for sale), I have no idea why but it looked interesting to me. Started researching about the game, the more I read about it the more excited I got, but 20 euro is not cheap to me for a game that looks so outdated, so I kind of hesitated about buying it. I couldn't stop myself from buying it after hearing lots of positive things about the game (good writing, non-linear), so I bought it. I am 8 hours in the first game, and it becomes more fun each time I play it. If you like games based on stories and don't mind outdated graphics this is a great choice, it's been a type of game I've been looking for. I bought fallout on gog, but I couldn't get into it, 'cause the controls were too stiff for me. This game has quite smooth controls, and once you get to learn the turn based battle system, it's quite fun. It doesn't have a huge amount of items and weapons, so you can focus more on exploring and reading the story. If you are not sure about buying this game, you can look on http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/products.html for the demo. Though the demo didn't run that great on my pc, the steam version runs better (still slowdowns for some weird reason, but not unplayable). So my suggestion: buy it! |

I have to concur with the others, this is a great game. The story is wonderful, and more than compensates for the crappy graphics (which really aren't that bad after a while, you get used to them). All spiderweb games are great on story, which is the most important thing in an RPG.
