Steam Client Won't Update

Alright. So I downloaded the cilent, steam.exe, and normally when you open it it starts up with "Steam - Updating" and a percentage next to it. But when i open it it stays at "Steam - Updating" with NO progress bar and after a few moments it closes. About 1 minute later it will open with an ERROR file that says bluntly "Steam.exe (main exception): To run Steam, you must first connect to the Internet". I've tried next to everything so I finally decided to ask for help here. Is it my firewall or do I need to forward a port? Anyone or anything that could help would be greatly appreciated.

What exactly do you suggest I try? I mean, some of the options have the errors commonly gotten and then proceed to help you fix the problem, but i don't see my error listed on any of these.
