Reverting "ugridstoload" No longer working

I've been playing with a "ugridstoload" setting at 9 (among other ini chnages). It's been running fine crash free. But today I wanted to see again how much of a hit in FPS I was taking with that setting. So I followed the procedure to revert it (one that i've done a few times before successfully).

Open save as usual
open command prompt
setini "ugridstoload:general" 5
saveini
refreshini

once that's all done, as soon as i exit the command prompt to save it crashes the game. I have to go back into the ini and set it back to 9 so I can load the save (it changed the setting just failed to refresh). If i do this indoors, it will be fine until I go outside. As soon as i load outside it crashes, and does not lock the save to the new setting.

This is a new thing. It always used to work before. Anybody else finding this? Or know a way around it?

edit: I've tried starting with fresh ini's. Tried running the game with and without the 4gb launcher. Neither worked.

Nothing I've tried has worked. I don't really understand why the revert method that has worked since Fallout has suddenly stopped.. Could it be related to this exe patch?

Can someone else who has changed their ugridstoload test to see if they are able to revert it still? So I can know if it's a problem on my end or not.

Weird, it worked for me just a few hours ago (I went down from 11 to 9). Have you tried loading a different save?

I had the same issue. Set it to 9, wanted to revert back and had constant crashes when I loaded my latest savegame.

Here's what I did:
- Load your latest savegame
- Switch to desktop and edit the ini to the ugridstoload value you want
- open the console and write 'refini'
- save the game
- restart skyrim and it should work again

edit: Although it seems you're doing it correctly, try to circumvent editing the ini with commands. It's definitely not related to the patch, I did this with the new exe file.

Okay so I figured it out (sort of). Apparently it had something to do with that other ini file in the skyrim folder. Skyrimcustom.ini.

I have no idea where that came from (b/c I didn't put it there and the only mods i use are texture packs I manually installed).

But when I deleted that it worked. What's weird is that after restarting skyrim and loading again, it didn't generate another skyrimcustom.ini file, so I don't have any idea what that even was...

oh well!
Thanks for help though guys!

The stupid thing is, I had the game working finally for a while but decided that the altered grids setting of 11 was too slow in more complex areas, so I set it back down to 5, following the reverting instructions. Now the save games won't load at all (new game would work it seemed, though, confirming it's the save game) and I've got this stupid red tint on the models in the menu system that I can't seem to get rid of. I've tried deleting the skyrim.ini, several times over after trying out different things, I've even tried going back to ugrids setting of 11 and that doesn't work etiher - the game just crashes after 1 or 2 seconds of loading the save game.

I have this same exact problem, with the red tint. I think the harsh truth is my games are gone for good.

Are you using ENB Series?

Got it fixed with that link, there's a hidden skyrim.ini file in the data directory of the game itself. Supposedly new with this latest patch. Still have red menus though, but at least i didn't lose my game.

Never using uGridsToLoad again!! Stay away from it!!

The solution in the link worked for me too, check the link above.

But very important, delete the skyrim.ini file in the data folder. It messes things up.
