MODDING: Generate Custom Waves in OMD!

Creating Custom Onslaughts for Orcs Must Die! 1

We have created a path that allows users to modify Onslaught files for Orcs Must Die! Onslaught files are the files that control the enemies, timing, and various other details of the waves in Orcs Must Die!

NOTE: Robot Entertainment DOES NOT officially offer technical support for modified versions of Orcs Must Die! There is potential to encounter bugs or performance issues based on the custom waves that you create using the method outlined below. We will not be supporting those issues. If you customize the game and encounter problems that you cannot fix, even if you've removed all of the customization files, remove the game from your computer and re-install a clean copy.

Download Default Onslaught Files

Before getting started, you can download a zip file with all of the default Onslaught and Timing files at this link. Use these files as your base templates to create custom waves.

How It Works

  • Create your custom Onslaughts from the default files and add them to this directory: ##WhereEverSteamIsInstalled##\steamapps\common\orc s must die!\data\mod\onslaughts\
  • The game will only load a modified version of an onslaught or timing file that is referenced by the core game. This means that you are limited to modifying the contents of existing files (download from the link above). You can’t create entirely new onslaughts.
  • If the folder above containsa file with the same name as an existing default Onslaught, the game will load the custom files to the exclusion of the base game Onslaught. This means that you can edit the contents of the default files, but you shouldn't change their file names.
  • If there is any modified Onslaught or Timing file located in the folder above, then the game will disable posting leaderboard scores and stats for ALL LEVELS in the game, modified or not.
    • There is no messaging or notification for errors in the files or to indicate that you are locked out from leaderboards due to modification. Use at your own risk.
  • To return the game to its default state simple delete the contents of the onslaughts directory, and you will be back to playing the default version of the game.

interesting...

what about opening it all up

allow us to define our own campaingns and the levels within a compaign

basically there would be a compaingn template where you specify the levels and a level template where you specify the waves (onslaught) and the map to use from existing list of maps

also open it up so that for our campaign we can define things like the weapons, traps, upgrades, costs, delays, chance of hitting, amount or percentage of damage that a weapon or device can deliver, amount of damage that a mob can take, chance of hitting, ect.

also would be nice to be able to edit text, fonts, sounds, triggers, textures for players, mobs, weapons, objects, surfaces, ect.

would also be nice to have a way to publish them... maybe some website people could go to to find mods, conversions, rate them, download them and read news about their release...

basically the more you open it up the more people can do with it and the more it adds value to your game and hopefully the more interest and sales you will get.

basically, you get the community working free for you

look we were able to do miracles with the little we got from dead island
http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=2106453

think about the good old days of pc gaming where developers worked on the engine and the community did the rest

^^ Good suggestions. I suspect it is one step at a time, rather wait 18+ months for some massive set mod utilities.

And ideally gamers will be primarily positive\constructive with their suggestions rather than typical rants in the forums that don't say much more than: "You suck for not providing everything I want, when I want it, without glitches\bugs, and for free..." which tends to turn off developers from providing mod tools and info.

Would this tool allow for a user-created endless type mode?

Maybe not "endless" but you could probably make them really long.

There doesn't appear to be any limit to the number of waves in an onslought, so a simple cut and paste of existing waves to extend it to any desired number of waves should be easy.

Though an explanation of how the timing scripts work might help.

Not quite, but I've seen people throwing so many enemies in that it's taking them ages to get through. One guy had a wave of 10K orcs on Chokepoint that took over an hour to clear that one wave.

Bloody Hell! That's something I'd like to see, even if just for the obscene amusement factor.

Anyway, kudos to you guys. Absolutely loving the game - I find the game's excellent, very fluid and intuitive, plus the difficulty's just hard enough that you keep going back for "one more go then" without any frustration. In other words, you feel that if you fail the level, it's by a margin that's just out of your reach.

Got to say it, I'm impressed and I'm loving it. Allowing mods such as these can only move you up even further in my standing.

Not likely, they use a bunch of 3rd party tools to make the levels

I got a few questions.
Main reason is cause I'm making a program out of boredom, to create...
10 Monster Groups (Yes you can pick orcs all ten times)
With 5 groups per wave. (May up this I don't know yet though)

Have not gotten around to the waves being in the same file yet though.... So you'll have to put the files together till I get everything going.

Should be up and ready for user use sometime soon. (Don't expect it to be super fancy)

Is there a max amount of waves or groups?

What are all the names for the monsters that are used for making your own custom waves?
If I have these wrong can someone let me know?
Code:
Normal Name Onslaught Name
Orc Warrior HordeSwordsman
Crossbow Orc HordeCrossbowman
Kobold Runner HordeRunner
Ogre Ogre
Hellbat Wraith
Gnoll Hunter HordeHunter
Fire Ogre FireOgre
Fire Babies SmallWraith
Kobold Sapper KamikazeHordeRunner
Frost Ogre FrostOgre
Hobgoblin Shaman	Hobgoblin
Armored Ogre ArmoredOgre

Frost Bat FrostBat
Cyclops Mage HordeClops

While there may be many valid reasons not to open it up, 'uses a lot of 3rd party tools' isn't one of them. Have you not seen what the community has done with other games, for instance the GTA series, that were not opened up? The issue is rarely the tools in this day and age.
