SecuROM on Borderlands 1 Discussion

Why does this game's DLC still have SecuROM? It baffles me. I really would love to get this game and its DLC collection, but until all traces of SecuROM are removed or patched out, I am holding myself out of buying the game.

Come on Gearbox, I am willing to give you my sale, why do you have to treat me like a criminal?

Am I the only one who wants the game, but is holding out on getting it because of the 3rd Party DRM?

You need to have the dicussion with publisher 2K, 2K makes the final decision on DRM.

I once bought a game legitimately that had SecuROM, it trashed my DVD-RW drive. From then on, I make it a point to try to avoid SecuROM in games.

Thank you, I'll discuss it there.

There are workarounds for the securom/disc drive problems. Securom provides the info on this.

I agree the Securom is total balls. The game is great, it's a shame 2 of the DLC are riddled with Securom (with only 5 activations each). Who the hell would steal DLC? You need the Steam game to run the Steam DLC, so the Securom is pointless, especially since Steam acts as DRM already and the final DLC released without Securom. Makes for a completely inconsistent installation experience because you have to somehow remember to revoke the DRM before uninstalling.

And speaking of uninstalling, it's impossible to revoke the DRM. Running the revoke tool that all websites suggest you to run (RevokeAllDLC.exe)does absolutely nothing. It just gives an error immediately "the revocation process couldn't be completed properly".

If you don't like the securom, just buy the vanilla Borderlands on sale. I loved the game, lots of loot and PLENTY of time can be had in it.

Oddly enough I have never had any problems with Securom, despite all the horror stories about Securom being secretly designed to do the following:
  • Trigger random crashes several times per hour.
  • Cause computers on catch fire for no reason.
  • Spontaneously reformat all connected HDDs
  • Install a key logger
  • Constantly scan HDD for pirated software and send info to FBI
  • Steal accounts IDs and Passwords
  • Live spying on gamers using web cams and mics for game companies and US government
  • Use email to send spam
  • Uninstall competitive software\games
  • Install hidden subliminal mind control software
  • Eat memory and peg CPU doing nothing
  • Enable Admin remote control of system
  • Display fake error messages
  • Random shut down of computer in the middle of TF2 games
  • Disable Steam acheivements
  • Reconfigure home router to block MP games
....

I do wonder why they bothered to add Steamworks and cloud support, but not get rid of the SecuROM. Contractual obligation or what?

It may help some people to know that Borderlands by itself is pretty much safe. The SecuROM is inert until you add DLC to it.

I also refuse to purchase anything on Steam with additional DRM, especially if it's SecuROM. I don't care how good the game is. I simply refuse to allow SecuROM to be installed on my computer. While I do think a lot of the accusations against SecuROM are mostly paranoia and/or fallacy (e.g., "Constantly scan HDD for pirated software and send info to FBI", "Cause computers on catch fire for no reason."), what SecuROM does do is degrade the product you legitimately purchased. It makes you "lease" your game, basically, by giving you a limited number of activations. It's also known to have its fair share of problems, all of which are completely non-existent to pirated copies of the games. Basically, the bottom-line is this: if a developer encumbers their games with DRM to the point that it's literally inferior to a pirated copy, I'm perfectly okay with simply not playing it at all.
