It's "player.additem xxxxxx x"

It totally didn't occur to me that I can find console codes for any item in the game by typing, for example:

OP, you might not be aware of this, but there are about 4 codes for each piece of armor. Each code gives you the item you would get had you found it naturally, depending on your level. If you find it early, you get the weakest version. If you find it when you're level 50, you get the strongest version. If you use the command I showed you (changing for each piece), the strongest version is always the last code it gives you.

I can see using the console for many things, but I'd rather wait to get these items through the quest, in my opinion.

once you start cheatting i find i lose interest in the game i prefer to earn it. thanks anyway

Well, I'm not much for cheating, but simply using the console does not qualify as cheating. I myself have used the console in previous games to fix quests, make visual changes to my characters (showracemenu and setscale, for example) and I really don't see anything wrong in giving yourself a properly leveled version of an item for which you fought.

I mean, I wouldn't give myself any of the Nightingale items if I hadn't done the quest, and it sort of sucks to be level 40 and to have this awesome-looking set in your inventory that has really underwhelming stats because you did the quests at a low level.

I completed the thieves guild quest line (the best quests in the game, in my opinion) and getting this armor was a fantastic reward.

However, I wanted to test out a mod that someone created for the male version of the armor (my main character is female), so I used the console to nab the armor quick. For stuff like that, the console is very handy. Not everyone is using it to cheat :P

If I got the item early on and upgraded it, will the stats be equivalent or better than the most powerful version of it?

No. The enchantments that come with the armor when you find it stay with the armor.

The only way to make the armor scale with your level is to use the console. In my opinion... that's not exactly cheating. I think it was silly of Bethesda to do it that way.

i orrigionally got it through the qurest and all, however due to what i think was a bug, it has dissapeared from my inventory, or maybe i dropped in some obscure dungeon i dunno, anyway, i needed to get it back and this helped a lot, thank you for posting this.

It's better if you play and get all the items and then get a dupe with the console.

Thanks, but i, like others would prefer to get it via the quest. The few times i have used console commands to "cheat" i have quickly lost interest in that character and started another.

If people do use console commands though, i dont see it as cheating. I mean, who are you cheating exactly, its a single player game. If people like to do it then all power to them. I would hope these people have completed it at least once without any "cheats" though, just to appreciate the game as it was intended to be played.

Correct Nightingale Hood is 000fcc12

Also Nightingale Blade 000f6527 cannot be upgraded via smithing, so get 000f6526 instead
