Maelstrom: Assertion failure at start of game

I can't run this game. After the initial load, the music plays for 3 seconds before the alarm sounds, and the loading screen locks up with a message about "Assertion Failure". I'm using Windows 7 pro 64-bit, and tried the compatibility mode in Vista SP2 and XP SP3.

What should I try next?

Hello, I don't know if this will help or not but I had a similair problem and I was able to bypass the issue by launching the configuration utility and setting full screen to OFF. I still got the error message but now I was able to see the error text box and when I selected RETRY, the game loaded okay. Having full screen off does not seem to affect gameplay in a negative way. I am running Windows 7 64 bit with an ATI 5770 graphics card.
