Slightly stalkery question re: Online/Away status

If you have 'Alert me when a friend comes online' turned on, do you get alerted if a friend is Online, but manually changes their status to Away, then back to Online?

I know it doesn't happen with the auto-away function, but I've seen people pop-up when going from Away to Online - any idea why that might happen?

i haven't seen it happen. The only time I have seen it is if you have a conversation window open with said person, it will say in the actual text box:

xxxxx is away
xxxxx is online
xxxxx has been zoomed into space.

So no pop up.
