Your top 10 games of all time

Hey all
Now I know these lists pop up pretty regularly but they are so much fun and there's nothing better than discussing why Half Life was better than Unreal, or vice versa. So without any further ado, here's mine, be prepared, this is possibly the greatest list of all time.
  1. Knights of The Old Republic (1)
  2. Half Life
  3. Half Life 2
  4. Halo Combat Evolved
  5. Oblivion
  6. Super Mario 64
  7. Mario Kart 64
  8. Deus Ex
  9. Unreal (1)
  10. Zelda Ocarina of Time

There are a few games that missed the list, Super Smash Bro's Melee, Goldeneye, Crash Bandicoot, System Shock 2 (would be pretty close to 10 I reckon), Fallout 3 (played the first two too late, couldn't get into them), Far Cry, Crysis, Call of Duty 1,2,4 etc and a couple more but yea you get the point

So what's your favourite game of all time??

Shouldn't this be in off topic? Anyhow

1. Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy IX and Mass Effect 2 (all tied for first, can't pick one)
2. Legend of Zelda - Majora's Mask
3. Super Mario Galaxy
4. Legend of Zelda - Twilight Princess
5. Final Fantasy 10
6. Dragon Age: Origins
7. Kingdom Hearts
8. Batman Arkham City
9. Assassin's Creed II / Brotherhood (love both of them equally)
10. Jak 3

1. Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
2. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
3. Civilization II (the first modern Civ) / IV (the "definitive" Civ)
4. Unreal Tournament (epic modding scene)
5. Half-Life 2 (but only because it introduced the Source engine and paved the way for games like Portal and TF2 -- I absolutely hated the platformer gameplay of HL2)

Those are the ones I can think of that transcended their genre, instead of merely being good games for the year they were released in.

I should put down Diablo and Starcraft, but to be honest, I didn't enjoy either, and far preferred the games they influenced like Titan Quest, Borderlands, and Dawn of War / Company of Heroes.

10. Braid

9. Left 4 Dead 2 (Left 4 Dead 1 was more revolutionary, but it's basically included in L4D2 now anyway)

8. Descent: Freespace 2 (the best space flight simulator ever made. It's no wonder they don't really make them any more. They really don't need to as this was perfection)

7. Medieval 2: Total War (again Rome: TW was more revolutionary, but this did what Rome did only better)

6. Fallout 2

5. Deus Ex

4. Half Life

3. Planescape Torment

2. Doom (changed everything about video games. Probably the single most influential video game of all time--yes, even more influential than "Mario")

1. Dwarf Fortress (this is the game to end all games, really. Massive, ongoing, brilliant, all encompassing. It's the video game equivalent of James Joyce's "Ulysses." It's already the most fascinating virtual world ever constructed, and new stuff is being added constantly).

Do people typically play this as-is (in ASCII form), or do most people use tilesets / mods?

I feel like it would be a bit inaccessible to those of us who were introduced to the genre through more graphically advanced games like Minecraft and Terraria.

Usually as is. Although there are a few interface mods designed to make the interface easier and even a few graphics mods that replace the ASCII with isometric sprite graphics. I've never really tried them, though, so I don't know how they work.

I think we should separate SP from MP.
Five games each:
SP
1- Half Life 2 (entire series)
2- Portal 2
3- Portal
4- Half Life (right... I know what you're thinking)
5- Crysis
As you can see, no rpgs.. well that's my fault, i've never liked singleplayer roleplaying games.

MP
1- Counter Strike (entire series)
2- Battlefield (entire series)
3- Left4Dead (entire series)
4- Team Fortress 2
5- World of Warcraft

Someone had Shenmue 2 on their list, this definitely should get into the honourable mention category it was a great game (never played the first). FF10 as well. Seeing Half Life/2 in so many lists is good, as really does deserve to be there. Counterstrike and BF2 are deserving as well. Colorado has got an extremely good list (Planescape Torment etc), Dwarf Fortress is a fav with many of my friends but was to indie for me to get into.

To me it just highlights how games haven't been anything to special in recent years with only series games or Valve games popping up that have been done recently. It's actually really sad.

Battlefield Bad Company 2
Team Fortress 2 (the first 70 hours of it)
Pokemon Generation 1
Pokemon Generation 2
Dragon Age Origins
Assassin's Creed 1
The first half of Assassin's creed 2

That's it. These are the only games I've ever really, really liked. Few games succeed in capturing my interest. I didn't like Oblivion, I didn't like BF3, I didn't like brotherhood at ALL, didn't like Dragon Age 2, and I didn't like Half Life. I've put many hours into COD4, but I've never been very good at it, or enjoyed it very much.

Not really. They're fun for you because people like to talk about themselves. The truth is that no one else really cares about other people's lists.

No, they are fun because you get to see games you haven't necessarily heard of or played and it gives you motivation to play them. I like hearing about games that are good, games that are actually good by peoples standards not sites like IGN and whatnot that more often get payed to review a game well.

A good example is the guy who mentioned Shenmue 2, I had great fun with that yet it completely slipped my mind to even mention it. I'm glad he brought it up as I know can go and play it (sadly I can't as I don't have a xbox any more, but the opportunity for otehrs is therre). This is why these lists are fun, if you don't want to contribute, don't.

Oh. well, I care about everyone else's lists.

And I'm sure almost everyone would deny that they just like talking about themselves.
