How do I disable Steam auto updates?

How do I disable the Steam auto game, driver, etc. updates? I don't like things being done automatically, as even sometimes updates cause problems. So how do you disable it? Please help!

Unfortunately this cannot be done at the moment, you can stop steam from updating automatically every time an update is posted, but the next time you run the game it will auto update. There is no way to disable this afaik.

What changes if they are automatic or manual?
If they fail they will also fail if you install them manually.

You can, however, disallow updates for games to automatically install. You'll have to do it separately for each game, though. There is no way to turn off automatic Steam Client updates, as the newest version is required to login.

This is one of the problems with Steam. Please make an option to disable all "game updates". You can still update Steam though.

you have steam offline for that, no updates guys exactly what you want...

I would be actually more carefull with non-automatic updates. It's one of nice thing to get things flow much better. It's quite terrible to listen some of our customers with

- we need this fixed
- you have 8month old version, it's fixed in version xxx
- we don't want to upgrade, could you just make some little fix for our version

I have never faced bad update on my game. It could happened as I've seen released some. But they are in sooo minority. And the problems with bunch of different versions... and a lot of customers who turn that off who knows why and then they reporting bugs fixed looong ago.

I still say you need an option to disable these options. I turned "offline mode" on. Guess what, next time I checked Steam options, it was on. It's like the settings weren't taking.
If you have a problem with a game and you can't check if the game has a patch available and read the notes on what that patch fixes, then your an idiot.

Do you have gmod installed? That updates a lot of source games unless you explicitly tell it not to.

It doesn't update your drivers automatically, it just updates the Steam client itself, no need to worry about anything breaking.

the problem is that some games redownload the entire game when there is an update, the devs of these games tell us its a steam issue.

i just woke up and saw nuclear dawn had downloaded a 5GB patch, i havent been playing ND recently, i would like to download the patch when i choose, when i know i have available bandwidth and when i decide im gonna play it again.

I dont want to uninstal all the games im not playing right at this momment just to stop unwanted downloads happening.

Steam should have an option to "notify patch available"

For an online multiplayer game 'not updating' it is entirely unrealistic. If you don't match up the client/server versions you won't be able to log in. So you will have to get the update eventually.

Note that while it 'says' 5GB is downloading it's actually only getting the deltas so it's not that much data depending. I got the update and it definitely did not send 5GB of data.
