I did this, among other tweaks, and it didn't change anything. It did result in crashing my game at certain points, though.

Don't know if people are aware of this but film grain in the menu is on by default.
Turn it off to see the difference. |

Strangely enough these changes aren't doing anything for me. It's particularly noticeable with Garrus' face.

Sorry to hear that guys. I tried this soulution on four PCs and it worked on all of them...I usually turn down the film grain also, it makes the game look worse imo. |

just cause ME1 character textures aren't up to the par of ME2, but he's not the muddy blur that he is without the tweak.

Wow, thanks for the fix! The character textures look so much better now.
This topic should be stickied until an official fix is released. |

I am absolutely amazed at how much of an improvement this fix has made. +Rep to you, OP. Thanks so much for posting this. Here are some comparison screenshots for anyone that hasn't tried this yet:

That was on max settings, too. I hadn't played the game in ages, uninstalled it quite a while back. At the time, it never looked so awful. It looked great, in fact. I decided to install the game again today, and that hideous mess of "textures" is what I was greeted with. No idea why they looked so bad when they never did before, but I'm just glad this fix worked.

Thank you for the pictures, I will put them into the first post for everyone to see. I also agree that the game did not look this way, when it was released. I played it without any tweaks and there were no graphical problems. The first time I saw this error was around 2010, when I wanted to play the game the third time. Very strange, but atleast there is a solution for it now. ![]() Unfortunately, it looked the same crappy way for me and for my friend also. |

I wonder if the game looks worse now than it did years ago, due to newer graphics hardware not being recognized and the game forcing settings low as a result?

That is actually entirely possible...it would have to be some of the very newest hardware however. ME1 looked the same after I switched from a nVidia 7900GS to a AMD HD5770 (including a full system reinstall).
