Laggy controls?

the ship doesn't seem to move with my mouse rather it moves to my mouse location slowly as if I'm steering with a joystick instead of a mouse...anyway it feels really weird is this intentional? if it is and there's no fix I guess it's back to Tyrian 2000 for me oh well...

Yeah, it's intentional. The reason for it is that if you could move the ship at the same speed you could your mouse, it would give mouse-players a ridiculously enormous advantage over those who play with a gamepad or keyboard. The speed is supposed to be limited.

If playing with the mouse feels weird, you can try the keyboard.

The controls aren't laggy, they are very responsive. Like Giest118 said already your problem is that you are using a mouse and you are trying to make the ship go faster than it can. After all there is a speed-limit.

In my opinion the game is best played with a controller.

A controller works best with this game.

I've played it with just about everything and this is my verdict.

Keyboard works just fine but I prefer using a controller when using the gunner ship.

I agree with the OP. The fact that your ship doesn't move with the mouse is terribly disappointing and awkward.

Has anyone ever played this game with an arcade stick? I'm curious how well it would work with one, I'm always trying to give myself enough reasons to justify buying a $150 controller lol

This game would be excellent if it weren't for the mouse lag. I understand the need for this if you are playing coop with others who are using a controller, but it should removed if you are playing single player.

Actually, I did xD My brother had this controller:

And I had the USB dongle for wireless 360 controllers and it worked!
I only give it a small test run, I didn't remap the controls, so I got confused and canceled Vault many times by mistake, however I found the Gunner control to be more precise thanks to the arcade stick.

If you are going to buy one just for this game, I wouldn't recommend it, but it does work great.
