Can't start a new game.

I got one to start with an AI player, but now all New Game's just go to a blank chat screen.

That's when the game decides to start up at all...

And even then, I'm locked into a Demo version.

Bleh.

Seems like the only winning move is not to play.

Try this

Try some tweaks in the preferences.txt

ScreenWidth = 1024
ScreenHeight = 768
Windowed = 1

RenderLobbyEffects = 0

ScreenAntiAliasing =0

Also try to paste what's in the debug.txt and blackbox.txt as well

Also as usual attempt to go to the latest video drivers and update directx, then reboot.
