Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee non-Steam Version Runs Fine - Steam Version Does Not
Like a few others posting here, my Steam installed Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee has never worked correctly. It has displayed the same behavior many have reported here in the forum: Somewhat slow load times, videos and cut scenes correctly displaying, and then when reaching the actual game (Raisins Cave), having an unplayable 4 to 9 fps framerate. I tried literally everything posted here in the forum to fix the problem without any success - processor affinity, disabling desktop theme, nVidia Control Panel settings, disabling the Steam overlay, running in lower resolution, reinstallation of DirectX, deletion/reinstallation of the game in Steam, file verification, and more that I can't recall.
Recently, I purchased this Indie bundle for my sons and myself which also has Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee (non-Steam) as one of the included games : http://www.getgamesgo.com/little-big-bunch (Link posted just in case anyone wants to buy the pack, $1.50 minimum) 01-06-2012 Edit: This Indie bundle sale referenced above has now ended, and you will not be able to get the game here any longer. My son installed the non-Steam Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee from the bundle, and it worked flawlessly. Wondering if it would work for me too, I also installed it. Lo and behold, the game ran flawlessly on my computer too, without changing any settings. (I have a dedicated "D" Steam drive and installed this copy on my "C" drive) So, it appears that the problem is related only to the Steam version. Although I can now play the game fine, I still would like to find the solution to the problem with the Steam version. Any ideas? Fix? No, it's not a fix, just a fairly inexpensive way to be able to play the game until I can figure out the Steam version problem. Thanks, but I'll pass on using any cracks.

Hello,
We've heard of this before, I'm worried that Valve did NOT post the final update for this version of the game... Could people try this ... http://www.oddworld.com/updates/Munc..._UPDATE_v2.zip thanks. Stewart |

Hi Stewart,
Thanks for responding to my post. Nope, I tried those 4 files, and the game still does not respond correctly. As the files you posted are the same exact size as what I had, I'm assuming I already had the final update files installed, but I did try those you posted anyway just to be sure. The non-Steam retail version of the game definitely works flawlessly, so I don't think it's a problem with the game itself - it has to be something with Steam (although I do have over 700 other games on Steam that run fine), or a problem in my computer settings or hardware the game conflicts with. Also, I do have the entire Oddworld series of games, and the others are all Steam versions too and run fine. I'll continue to play around with various options from time to time as I think of them, and I'll definitely let you know if I find the solution. Again, thanks Stewart for the assistance - you're GREAT! Last edited by RWLewis2nd: 01-05-2012 at 06:12 AM. |

That's very weird as the ONLY difference is that it does NOT have the SteamWorks SDK stuff in it, you know for achievements etc :-/
Very weird. |

If it's wierd, it's definitely going to happen to me with my luck.
Seriously though, I'm assuming it's something very simple and overlooked on my part causing the problem - I'll find it eventually I think.

Stewart, here's a little more information on this for you:
I tried Dubsteptonic's fix posted here http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=2465577, but it did not work for me. What did work, however, was running the game directly from either launcher.exe or munch.exe in the Steam game files, WITHOUT setting a compatibility mode. Doing this, the game ran flawlessly, with the exception of not having the Steam Shift-Tab overlay for the game available (although you do still have the basic overlay via Shift-Tab, just nothing for the game included in it). But, at least for me, saving a game using the above then starting the game via the Steam client still gives me unplayable 4 to 9 fps frame rates. So, it is possible to run the Steam game version just fine, albeit without the full Steam overlay, by not using the Steam client and starting the game from the launcher or .exe files directly. Starting the game as above, I am getting initial screen frame rates of 1670+ fps and in-game frame rates of 450+ fps, without v-sync. With v-sync, I am getting a solid 59 fps, even though my monitor's refresh rate is 60 Hz. Although this does not solve the problem and allow running the game via the Steam client, at least the game is playable using the files for it under Steam. You just won't be able to complete any achievements for the game starting it this way. Hopefully, this is a bit more information toward finding the final solution. Hi,
That's VERY odd indeed... This is perhaps something we should ask the Steam developers, thank's I'll bring it to their attention. Stewart |

I bought the Oddbox about a year ago and just today wanted to play this game for the first time, so when I started the game it took around 20 minutes of being stuck on a black screen before the game actually started. After I was finally on the main menu I noticed the only keys on my keyboard that respond in the game is my down and right arrow keys along with the enter key. It just sucks that it took me a year to find this out but this game is unplayable with only 3 keys working. Anyone know if there is a way to configure a file in the directory to change button layouts?

This has happened before. I personally have no issues with Munch, other than the two broken achievements, but when playing Psychonauts on Steam, then I have control issues, which are not there when I play the humble bundle one, even though they should both be the same version.
