Defense Grid is excellent if you like tower defense.

^ I'd go with this

I agree with almost everything you said except the first sentence.

If you want a real small unit military RTS game, go with the Men of War series. After Assault Squad, playing Company Heroes, in terms of strategy, feels like I'm playing a Facebook game.

That being said, Men of War has a steep learning curve and is not simple, so keep that in mind.

My Picks:

Base Building RTS: Supreme Commander 2
Space 4x Strategy: Sins of the Solar Empire Trinity
Turn-Based 4x Strategy: Civilization (4 or 5)
Military Battle Strategy: Shogun 2 Total War
Small Unit RTS: Men of War: Assault Squad

MISC: Frozen Synapse and Greed Corp

The All Time Greatest Strategy Game Ever Crafted By A Human Being: Europa Universalis 3: Chronicles

Europa is a game for people who like their strategy as deep and as complex as humanly possible. It is a game that when you win, you really feel like you out-witted your opponent instead of feeling like you clicked faster than they did. It's brilliant; however, like Men of War, it is not for the feint of heart.

Indeed it is. It's a fine example of tower defence.

For my RTS fix I usually turn to any Dawn of War or Dawn of War II game. I just recently picked up Shogun 2 and haven't tried it yet.

I'd recommend something from the Total War series. I have Shogun 2 and I love it.

Real time or turn based? Most real time games (with the exception of Total War) barely even count as strategy these days.

World in Conflict
DEFCON
Sins of a Solar Empire
Total War series (specifically Medieval 2)
Dawn of War series (except for Soulstorm, which sucked)

My personal favorites.

Sins. Of. A. Solar. Empire.

(I had to split the sentence up, because otherwise it would have contained too much awesomeness)

I found myself recently enjoy some one classic RTS game, like CC or starcraft, or age of empire.
