Skyrim Sound Help

Hey guys, I looked around the forums and I can't seem to find a fix that works for my problem. I'm on a 5.1 speaker setup and whenever an NPC talks, I can't hear him only when i look directly at him. I tried verifying my game cache, reinstalling the game and changing my sound quality to 16bit. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem? Thanks.

5.1 makes NPCs hard to hear in front

i just got some new 5.1 surround speakers for Christmas and i am having this problem too, NPC speech is barely audible when i am looking at them i have to turn left/right to hear it properly.

tried messing with a bunch of settings but nothing i did has fixed it yet.

any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

update your sound drivers, some very old versions are not fully compatible with xaudio 2.7

also, configure your system audio to between 50 and 65% and adjust from the speakers.

my drivers are the latest and i've had a response from Bethesda to change the playback default format to 44.1 Khz (44100) and 16 bit (CD quality) which didn't change anything.

i went into my windows settings and changed my speaker setup to stereo from 5.1 and it works now as intended... so now the question i have is why is this happening? i shouldn't have to manually change my speaker setup every time i want to play Skyrim and then change back when i am done playing to get surround sound.

my soundcard is an onboard VIA HD VT1708S. i have tried messing with a bunch of settings (which are fairly limited as it is) and the only thing i can do to make the game play sounds from the front of my character is to have speakers in windows set to stereo and not 5.1 surround.

anyone have any suggestions on why this is happening and a possible solution that doesnt include constantly changing speaker setup in windows?

Its a game breaker for me.

I have tried all the fixes on the forums and have had a very minor increase in sound. Conversation with NPCs is impossible, sounds in the wild are barely audible. Get jumped at random, although I did once sort of hear a wolf!

Im using a realtek onboard sound and only have a stereo headset. I must use a headset as the PC is in living room.

I hope this is patched ASAP.

I've done what everyone says and nothing worked for me. It's only voices. Anything else is fine, but directional speech is borked on surround systems.

I had this problem with my ASUS Xonar DX board.

I changed the settings on the control panel from

6 channel (5.1) to 2 channel and it fixed the problem.

Skyrim sounds better without 5.1 set.

I use headphones so stereo is best anyway.
