Red face "Failed to find Steam"

Installed the game and tried to play then got this error message which launched the Steam Store page on IE.
No way to get the game to run.

I know others have had this problem, but under "Gamedata->Save" there is only "Dummy", a text file. When I go to the main directory there is only "Launch RC" which gives you the splash screen. Try and start the game there and it demands you insert a CD.

Steam Support don't ever get back to me about anything anymore (they're useless anyway) so any fixes would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Nope, no fix for Windows 7 64-bit?
Uninstall then and into the virtual trash.

I have the same error. I can't get the game to start because it can't find Steam for some reason.

I'll have to remeber that one.
Thanks for what is probably an obvious solution, and with the widescreen fix I can once more enjoy bug hunting.

I've been having the same problem. Logging out and back in to Steam is not resolving the issue. I've set the .exe file to run in compatibility mode, and selected run as administrator, with no change in results. Any ideas?

I found restarting Steam works, however I have to do that every time I go back to the game after an interval of 5+mins. Just not worth it.

C'mon Steam....fix this!

[submitted a ticket, so I should get a reply sometime next year....]

My Two Cents

Same problem here. Just wanted to put my two cents in in hopes of keeping some attention on this issue until it is resolved.

Add me to the list! Restarted steam and it worked okay, until I tried starting a new game - instant CTD

Changed back to "Highest" settings (1024x768) and it works perfectly, restarted and changed to a decent resolution (1600x1200) and it still works.

So start a game in low settings, save and restart and change to higher settings....lets hope this fix keeps working...

This fixed the issue for me:

  • Exit Steam
  • Browse to Program Files/Steam in Windows Explorer
  • Delete ClientRegistry.blob
  • Reopen Steam

Would you explain what this does exactly, just so I know for my own info.
Thanks.

I'm not sure why it works or what the file does, (I saw it on another thread somewhere, I don't remember exactly), but Steam simply recreates the file when you reopen it, so presumably it's a cache of some sort.
