Landmark animals extinctions (or lack thereof).
I've been playing FotW for quite a while now and it seems the mechanics for the extinction of landmark species don't work as they should. In dozens of games I've only seen six landmark species go extinct and this includes games of Doctor Apocalypse where the temperature went up to six degrees and there was hardly a tree left anywhere in the world.
The only extinctions that trigger for me are: Arabian orynx - Middle East Blackfooted ferret - North America Walrus (obviously) - Russia Black rhino - Southern Africa Bactrian Camel - China Green sea turtle - Global I know from the lua files there are dozens more possible extinctions, including highly endangered species like the Bengal tiger and orangutan which should be very vulnerable. Even constantly playing Last chance buffet (Dr A.) and bringing the world to a boiling point doesn't trigger these. So what is going on here? Is this a known issue? Is there anything that can be done about it within the game files? As it stands it feels like something is missing as long as some of the most visible effects of climate change remain hidden. On a side note this also means the Delectation achievement is impossible to get. Update - I haven't been playing FotW for a while now, but I'm pleased as punch the developers actually take notice of a minor issue like this one. I'll be sure to return if there is ever a solution of sorts for my problem. Last edited by Batavorn: 02-10-2012 at 08:30 PM. |

In my experience, extinctions used to be much more frequent in earlier versions of the game, especially the beta. I'd hoped their absence these days was just due to me getting better at the game, but perhaps not.

I've taken note of this issue and will at some point review it. I don't know of any change we made that reduced extinctions, but the game is complex and it might have been affected indirectly.
Thank you for bringing it to our attention. Once again, this might not be a bug, but looks worth checking. |

I never kill off the orangutan, but my opening play includes stopping South Asia's deforestation right away. I also can't call it that with a straight face. "Opening play?" It's a bunch of stuff that I do. Otherwise I'm right with the other posters in this thread.
Extinctions were much more frequent in the beta, but those seemed to be a placholder: the walrus would go extinct in 2030 unless the animal protection card was played in Russia, not when Russia's environment had suffered enough. |
