I tried turning all the advanced graphics off and limiting the FPS and resolution but nothing changed. All I get is the blink of an empty window.

This is the demo version. I can run all 2D games on this machine and Recettear does the same kind of thing. I can get to the opening cutscene in that demo before it closes itself.

Another strange thing I've noticed: When I click Play in my Steam Library it always jumps to the Store page for these two games and hides the "Launch Game/Launch Config" pop-up behind Steam. I have to then click it on the taskbar.

Specs:
Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit
Intel T2060 @1.60 Ghz
2Gb RAM
Intel Integrated Graphics
No Sound Card/Sound Disabled

Graphics: DirectX 8.1-compatible video card of any type with at least 64 megabytes of video RAM; Nvidia and ATI tested *****(Intel Integrated Graphics below IntelHD series not recommended)*****

This might be your problem
