The game is fairly buggy at times.
I use Windows 7, and I was getting a lot of App Crashes when trying to play New Vegas too.

What seemed to fix it for me (or at least I don't get an App Crash much now, just rarely) was navigating to my Fallout New Vegas folder, and one at a time right-clicking on the FalloutNVLauncher.exe and FalloutNV.exe files, Properties, Compatibility, then I set the Compatibility mode to Windows XP SP3 for those files. Alternatively, I also choose to run those files with Admin level Privileges there as well (though not sure if that makes much difference or not).

I don't know if that will help you, but it could be worth a try.

Thank's for your reply.
I tried that. Didn't work.

Does someone know if there's another patch coming?
Otherwise I'm totally unable to play this game if there's no other solution.

I originally had this problem and it hasn't happened ever since I started booting FO:NV from the Fallout Mod Manager.

Hey guys!

Problem seemed to be fixed since I've created a new user account. I really don't know why it's working now. Curious problem, anyway I'm happy it got fixed.

Since the last patch I had also the "fallback to desktop" error in Skyrim. I fixed this by enabling the "transparent glass" setting under Aero. Maybe it also helps with Fallout if someone has this problem.

Seems like archive invalidation was causing this error. Now, after a clean reinstallation the game runs just fine.

Did you remove all your files with that reinstall or keep your saved files on you HD?

Removed EVERYTHING. Loading an old savegame caused the same error again.

It's a really bad software. A lot of crashes and most things doesn't work correctly.
