Unable to connect to Steam.

Hi,

I've just tried downloading and running the new Steam app for Android.
The app has installed and is running fine, however when I enter my account information the app just returns the message:
"Unable to connect to Steam. Please make sure you have a valid internet connection."

I've checked & double checked and my phone is definately connected to the internet - I can even access the Store.steampowered.com website from my phone's browser.

I've also tried connecting through a 3G connection in case there is a problem with our wireless / router settings and I still get the same message.

I'm living in the UK, using a Google Nexus One running Android 2.3.6.
Has anyone else encountered any similar problems?

Cheers,

Dav3

You do know that this is a beta invite only and you will not be able to login? Unless you have a beta key of course.

Hi TrippleD,

I am aware that i'm not likely to get logged in right away, however the information i've been seeing online suggests that I should be able to sign up for the beta simply by logging into the Steam app from my mobile device.

Namely from the Steam mobile page:
http://store.steampowered.com/mobile
"LIMITED BETA - TO EXPRESS INTEREST IN THE STEAM BETA, JUST DOWNLOAD THE APP AND SIGN IN"

Plus other forum posts such as:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=2506119

Also, I couldn't find any other way of signing up for beta participation in the app.

The first 2000 beta keys released went fast. Now all you can do is login. You will get a message saying Account not in beta if you login correctly. This does not mean you will have a beta key sent to you quickly.

Hey Dav3,
I'm actually having the same possible issue you are. I downloaded the app onto my android tablet, and when I go to sign in, I get the following message:
Unable to connect to Steam. Please make sure you have a vlaid internet connection.
I too realize that this is a beta and you have to wait for an invite; but I was under the impression that you were supposed to see a message when you attempted to sign in that lets you know that you've signed up for the beta. Something along the lines of "not in beta list" was supposed to show up. Instead all I get is the aforementioned message.

Any ideas? or anyone besides me and Dav3 having this issue? I've confirmed my connection obviously. I can sign in and out of my desktop no problem. I don't think anything is blocking Steam from connecting, but there seems to be something going on.

Motorola Xoom Android 4.0.3

I'm also having this issue. I assumed that they were having problems with their mobile server...or, perhaps, the beta was successful, and they're fixing a huge bug of some sort. I can't really be sure, of course.

KiteX3-
Were you ever able to generate the "not in beta" message that confirms signup? Or have you been getting this message since you started trying?

Just curious, as the former might indicate what you thought about there being a login/authentication server issue.

Have to wait and see I guess

Yes you should get "Account not in beta" if you login.

I am on an iPhone.

Having the same issue*, it might have occured because I tried to connect when my router was up the creek. Now the steam app can't seem to realise the connection is working again. (I reinstalled, but to no avail)

(The link to the steam agreement that's on the login page works though, odd!) And I'm using my phone to post this so my connection is deffo up!

* Same issue as in steam doesn't connect correctly to tell me I'm not in the beta yet.

**Using an Android HTC Desire S.

Hi guys,

Cheers for the replies, nice to know the same problem does occur in more than one location, so it *shouldn't* be a faulty connection at our end.

I've just had a bit of a play around with the app at my end and I have managed to get to a stage where it now says "Not in beta" - rather than a problem with my connection.

My train of thought led me to thinking that I couldn't sign on to Steam (Mobile) whilst my PC was logged into normal Steam.
So I signed out, tried again on the mobile and still the same connection message.
After signing back into Steam normally on my PC - my friends list showed as offline for a minute or two then the service resumed as normal.
Giving the app one last try - it then connected to the steam mobile service and says thanks for my interest in the beta.

So, either there's some database update which needs to be done and requires my account to be logged out for a few minutes, or i've just been incredibly lucky/unlucky with timing my login attempts.

Hope this problem clears up for everyone else soon.

I've been getting both at different times. I had the "not in beta" message, then I started getting the "unable to connect", it fixed itself ("not in beta"), and last I checked, it was "unable to connect". Checking right now, I just got "not in beta".

I'm pretty sure it's a problem on their side, whatever it is.

[Edit] For a bit more info, I was able to initially sign up at around 6:30 or 7:00 AM this morning, and I didn't have any troubles until much later in the day. (Probably 12:00 PM or so?) I've basically been refreshing it every half-hour or so, since I am, honestly, quite giddy about Steam on Android.

"Account not in beta" Now coming up correctly. I didn't change anything, so probably a cache issue or something at Steam's end I guess? Now I wait!

Same result for me as well guys. Picked up a connection finally yesterday afternoon/evening. Didn't make any changes on my end either, so I can only assume they're having a few hiccups. All seems to be well although I did get another connection warning in the evening when testing it. Most of the issues seem to have cleared up.

Hi

Im having same problem, I downloaded the app for android, logged in, and first I get a message that said: "Account is not in beta!"
After 3 days, I get an gift to my Steam account: "Steam Mobile Access". I could send that to my friend. Also I tried to open it for me, but it said I already have one.

So does that mean I can log in?
When I tried that, it said exacly the same that it said on Dav3.
("Unable to connect to Steam. Please make sure you have a valid internet connection.")

Im using:
HTC Desire S S510e
Android version: 2.3.5
HTC Sense version: 3.0
WLAN (24mb/1mb) connection provided by Elisa
